European Tandem Championship Anglet France

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 July, 2007 : - -  For the first time the European Surfing Federation (ESF) sanctioned a title for a Tandem surfing  championship. ITSA was asked by the ESF to run the contest under its International rules and to be sanctioned as one of its international events.

The contest took place at the same spot that the ASP Longboard World Title was given one month earlier. The waves at the famous beach break “Les Cavaliers” are very fast and hollow. It was very difficult for all the teams to execute many lifts the same wave but, the surf part took an important place. Europe doesn’t have too many teams besieds France and we were glad to see Brian & Illa taking their Irish passport to compete with us.

Semis were held 200 m away from the main spot with the body board and body surf division. The huge shore break gave teams some troubles to get in the water but finally all the teams gave their best and show the crowd that Tandem surfing could be an extreme sport and not just a long small no powerful wave’s sport.

At the 4th place a brand new team with only one contest before showed us some good disposition for the future. Clément & Délia from Biscarosse surfed with no fear and get awarded for that. Just behind Frederique Branger who used to surf with Valérie Duprat at the last world title get 3rd.

It was  good to see “Fred” recovered after some massive injuries and surfing so well with his new partner and girl friend Aurélie. They get the only 10 pts on surfing part of the contest.

Brian & Illa Mc Evilly had to get on the podium after the all country asked them to save to proud of IRELAND. During the all week the national team was not able to find any one to get on the final podium. The green crowd took the all beach to support their new “star” and was screaming after each wave.

They finally took the second place for the happiness of the team. Illa couldn’t leave her Irish flag on the podium and Brian almost found a new Irish sponsor for the next world title.

The 1st place comes to Rico & Sarah but only at the last wave. They couldn’t find the one who will allow them to lift as much as they can. They finally found it and score a 8 pts on the surfing part. A little mistake stopped them to the perfection with their favourite trick “Cobra” but the minimum was done and they could give France the 5th gold medals of the contest.

Next year wherever the European championship will be held we will have some Tandem in it and hopefully more teams from the entire continent. It was a first step for Europe Tandem Surfing and a real success. “Rendez vous” in one year.
