Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon readies for Dog Beach in Del Mar
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 July, 2007 : - - Let’s go surfin’ now! All the dogs are learnin’ how! Come on a Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon with me! The “aroma” of wet fur will fuse with the ocean breezes at North Beach in Del Mar on Sunday, September 9 during Helen Woodward Animal Center’s second annual “Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon”!
Everybody will be barking about it! This year’s event is guaranteed to be bigger and better with more dogs, more surfers, more spectators, more sponsors, and more prizes!
The 2006 Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon (our first ever) netted $10,000 to support the programs and services that Helen Woodward Animal Center offers for people and animals throughout San Diego. The event included: 50 registered (human) surfers; 10 registered surfing dogs; Dozens of dogs in the Beach Bum and Bikini Babe costume contests; More than 1,000 dog owners with their “best friends” that came to watch!
The 2007 Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon: September 9th 9:00am-1:00pm
· Expected to attract more than 200 registered surfers · 30 - 40 surfing dogs · Interactive activities for dogs (and kids, too) · New categories for surfers (Best Wipe-Out, Longest Wave, Most people on a single surfboard) · Grand Prize of a GT Board donated by Guy Takayama · Surfers raising 150.00 or more will be entered to win an all expense paid trip for two to K59 surf resort in El Salvador · Sponsor booths featuring surf products, clothing, and pet products · A fashion show featuring pets and “human” models from “Jet Set” modeling agency
Surfing Celebrities expected to attend the 2007 Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon so far:
· “Buddy – the Surfing Dog” (featured on Good Morning America) · Guy Takayama (Pro surfer, board designer, and owner of GT Surf Designs) · Scott Chandler (Pro surfer, board designer, and owner of Towsurfer)and his dog Zoey
Leading up to the 2007 Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon:
Dog Surfing Clinics on Saturday, August 4 and Saturday, August 11 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Dog Beach in Del Mar. Pat Webber and San Diego Surf Academy will “join paws” with Helen Woodward Animal Center dog trainer and behaviorist Rob Kuty (former manager of the Pets Rule” show at Sea World San Diego) to teach people and their dogs how to surf! Cost is $10 per dog, per clinic with 50% donated to Helen Woodward Animal Center.
Mahalo to the big kahunas and wahinis at Swami’s Surfing Association for judging the event again this year with the help of celebrity judge Guy Takayama. Mahalo nui loa to the Del Mar Lifeguards for keeping us safe as they allow us to use the Del Mar “Ilio Kahakai” (dog beach) again this year for Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 2nd annual “Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon”!
