SIXTEEN MEN READY TO BATTLE FOR THE TITLE!       > Portugues embaixo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 July, 2007 : - - The second day of the Buondi Pro Junior saw the best juniors in Europe go off in clean, glassy waves. Knowing they had to secure a good result in Portugal before meeting the international contingent this August in France, the juniors surfed solid heats.

Romain Cloitre (Reu), last year’s ASP Europe #4, was back on his board in heat 1to confirm he had improved during this year break training around the world. Despite a shoulder injury, Edouard Delperro (Fra) managed to qualify behind the Reunion Island born 18-year-old Cloitre.

“The waves are fun, it was a good heat to surf in and I’m just glad to get through this one straight away. Always important to get confidence on your first try in an event”, confessed the winner of the first battle.

The first surprise came from last year’s ASP Europe Junior #9 Jatyr Berasaluce (Euk), when the basque surfer couldn’t find any efficient rides to overtake Tristan Guilbaud (Fra) and the other talent of the Curren family named Nathan. The clean waves and bright colours were the frame of this first morning of action for our most promissing surfers, and all was in place to offer the defending regional champion Joan Duru (Fra) the potential to push the level further.

Surfing in heat 8, the 18-year-old youngman knew he could surf relaxed but still had to convince the rest of his potential opponents he had all the motivation to repeat last year’s good result when he finished second here in the Buondi Pro Junior, before winning the 1 Star WQS in the same week.

And as expected, he scored the highest total of the morning with 14 pts out of possible 20, looking at ease against fellow countrymen Marc Audo, Antonin De Soultrait and Mathias Maalem. “I’m glad to make this one, because I made the trip here to achieve a good result”, started Duru.

“Looking at the overall situation for me, I have been around more and more WQS events this year and am planning on going at all big ones this summer so I hope I can get points on the Pro Juniors I’ll be able to go to and secure a spot in the top 4 at the end of the year to have an entry in the World Junior Championships in Narabeen next year”, finished the regional defending champion.

Arthur Bourbon (Glp) just followed in heat 10 and seemed to be under Duru’s influence as he broke the record of the day straight away when he used his classic beautiful backhand style to easily overtake Gordon Fontaine (Fra)  and local Joao Guerra (Prt). Taking off on a long lefthander, Bourbon linked three big vertical turns before finishing in the shorebreak with another efficient move and score the highest single score of the event with a convincing 9 pointer.

“It was a good heat, found the right one and surfed it well. Just good to start this way,” said a quiet Arthur after he gave back his competiton red vest to the beach marshall. Vincent Duvignac (Fra), last year’s ASP Europe junior #7, was another outstanding performer of this second round when he totalled 16.66 pts after scoring two 8.33 pts rides showing an amazing power and flow to convince the ASP judges.

Round 3 started straight after Jean-Sébastien Estienne (Glp) qualified with a strong victory. Some upsets happened directly, when the first clashes between favourites took place. Charly Martin (Glp) and Romain Cloitre (Reu) were the first to qualify in a much anticipated battle where the two men remained close until Martin managed to get a second wave that gave him victory.

“It wasn’t easy out there, I started slowly and finished with this good 7 pointer while Romain went the oppositewith his 8 pts opening ride. But it’s good to be in the quarters for the first event of the year,” said Charly.

Marcos Sansegundo (Euk) had to forget about any intention while last year’s ASP Europe junior #5 Adrien Toyon (Reu) lost because of a knee injury that slowed him on his board. Joan Duru (Fra) kept firing with his power surfing, scoring an 8 out of possible 10 to win again and reach the quarterfinals.

Holder of the highest single score of the event, Arthur Bourbon (Glp) managed to get through round 3 with a second place behind David Leboulsh (Fra) who remains in top form after scoring yesterday the highest heat total of the event so far. The second day of the Buondi Pro Junior cut off the pack and only sixteen men remain for the showdown.

All favourites are ready for the ultimate battle for the title, and will be here at 8.30 AM tomorrow to get precious cash and points. See you, About ASP: The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) is the governing body of professional surfing.
