POWELL POWERS HIS WAY TO FIRST IN THE CHALLEGE CUP 2ND ROUND
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 July, 2007 : - - 16yr old Jake Powell wins the second leg of the U18 Challenge Cup with a dazzling display of powerful surfing at le Port over the weekend. Raking up high scoring waves on his backhand proved to be the winning formula throughout the early rounds, and again in the final his feisty approach was too much for Jake Elms, 16yrs, and Jacob Warr (Gsy) 16yrs, resulting in his first win of the season.
All the finalists had surfed 5 rounds previously and exhaustion showed on Elms and Warr throughout the final. The fluid style of Elms and radical approach by Warr seemed to disappear as the final reached a close.
Leader of the Challenge Cup from round 1, Nathan Elms 14yrs, was eliminated in Round 3 with the rest of the Under14 contingent leaving the way for the older surfers. The man on man format used in the Challenge Cup is proving to be a hit with the juniors as standards are improving from contest to contest.
With Nathan Elms’ early departure from the competition, now leaves Powell top of the leader board with 1729 points putting Nathan Elms in second with 1590 points, Joe Baker in third with 1490 points and elder brother Jake Elms in fourth with 1431 points
Joe Baker, 17yrs, gained the highest scoring wave of the competition but as with Nathan Elms, he was eliminated in Round 3. Baker’s bottom to top turn combos with sliding cut backs caught the judges’ eye and was duly applauded from spectators lining the sea wall.
The longboard final also proved to be entertaining with the top junior longboarders battling it out on the high tide. Jack Seymour, returning from training in France, was quick off the blocks by completing two high scoring waves within the first 8 minutes of the final.
Cole Jouanny’s stylish drop knee turns were executed perfectly but were not enough to worry Seymour. Scott Letherbarrow, Will Glenn and Felix Jones all surfed well, scoring highly but it was Seymour’s mix of traditional and modern longboard manoeuvres that sealed the victory.
The Under14 girls saw a change of fortune for Phoebe Gould and Jenny Walker. Gould, placed 7th last contest and Walker 4th, dug their heels in to dominate the final with Gould winning and Walker 2nd, leaving Megan Vibert in 3rd and Jenna Kleis 4th.
In the Under12’s, Ben Bates 11yrs failed to get any substantial waves leaving the way for Gus Brewer 8yrs, to demolish the inside sections along with rookie, Tom Carey 8yrs. Brewer showed true grit by running up the beach after surfing a long right hand wave to paddle back out again to catch another high scoring wave. This secured him victory, with Carey 2nd and Bates 3rd.
The Novices saw a three way battle with Hope Southam 6yrs, Kitty Brewer 6yrs, and Arthur Carey 6yrs. All surfed with control and balance but Hope Donaldson added some extra style giving her her first win of the Championships, with Brewer 2nd and Carey 3rd.
