Brothers Neilsen Junior Surf Challenge Fever Hits Sunshine Coast In October

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 July, 2007 : - - Expect carves, punts and shacks aplenty from Queensland’s new breed of up-and-coming grommets when the Brothers Nielsen Junior Surf Challenge hits the streets of the Sunshine Coast in October.

Developed in the early 1990s, the five-day tournament acts as a fantastic introductory competition for those 'groms' who have not competed before or have very little competitive contest experience. Maroochydore’s punchy beach breaks will provide the ideal arena with advanced and intermediate surfers fighting it for titles out across nine separate divisions.

Adding to the event’s already high stakes is the use of a second chance Surfing Australia format that guarantees all surfers at least two surfs. The event also doubles up as an elite contest for more experienced surfers in the U/16 and U/18 boys’ divisions. Long regarded as an area home to some of Queensland’s best past and present junior surfers, the tournament is an exciting linchpin of Surfing Queensland event’s calendar.

"This is a fantastic grass roots surf event positioned in school holidays for kids and their families,” said Surfing Queensland CEO Andrew Stark. “Its been running now for over 10 years and continues to offer a fantastic opportunity for budding junior surfers to compete in a fun and friendly event. We thank Brothers Neilsen for their on going support to this great event.”

Similarly, Brothers Neilsen co-founder Paul Neilsen said, “It’s great to be once again associated with the junior surf challenge.” “This event provides a valuable stepping stone for up and coming young pros as demonstrated by former winner Mitch Coleborn when he won the Brothers Neilsen 7 star Pro Junior on the Gold Coast in April this year."

Competition will commence on Monday 1st October, with finals being run on Friday 5th October, 2007. Divisions; including Boys U/18 and U/16 advanced, Boys U/18 and U/16 intermediate, Boys U/14, Boys U/12, Girls U/18, Girls U/16 along with Girls U/14 will be surfed. The main contest site is Maroochydore beach, but the event does have the option of going mobile from Alexandra Headlands to Peregian Beach.

Entries are now available from Surfing Queensland’s website, or by calling the Surfing Queensland Office on (07) 5520 1165. All divisions are limited – First in first served basis! Brothers Neilsen, established in 1971, has 11 retail stores located in prime major shopping centres and surf locations across Queensland.
