Dean Bowen wins the DVS Cadet Cup - Laura Enever beats the boys
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 July, 2007 : - - Australia’s top 16 and under surfers were not the slightest bit fazed by the small swells at North Narrabeen beach today charging the small peeling clean waves and racking up big scores at the DVS Cadet Cup which makes up part of the Dakine Pro Junior presented by Smith Optics.
The half meter surf allowed this classy field of already world rated and well traveled young surfers to demonstrate their skills with numerous excellent 9 point plus rides featuring throughout the day. While Sth Coast NSW surfer Dean Bowen (Gerroa) took a well deserved win in the final which included an early 9 point ride, his winning performance was almost overshadowed by the great efforts of young local girl Laura Enever (15/Narrabeen).
With the DVS Cadet Cup running at her home beach, the temptation to tackle the boys was too much and Enever made it to the final, knocking out plenty of well regarded male peers along the way and eventually finished 4th place overall in the final.
Bowen was happy and relieved to take today’s win saying “ It was a really fun event and despite small waves the conditions were good as you could still score big on these types of waves. Having Laura in the event and her pushing through to the final added to the whole day..
I know I was nervous about being beaten by her, she’s a great surfer and on her home beach she’s capable of beating me in a heat for sure and it sort of added pressure to perform at my best!” Winning’s always good and I’m well prepared for tomorrow’s main event.”
Bowen’s early 9 point ride which saw him execute a series of trademark powerful backhand bottom to top turns set him up for the comfortable win and in the end he easily defeated Davey Cathels (Nth Narrabeen) with Tom Myers (Freshwater) in 3rd place and Enever in 4th. Bowen last year won the highly regarded King of the Grom 16 and under challenge in France and 2nd placed Cathels has numerous international finals results.
Enever’s finals performance was marred by a double interference late in the final which didn’t really effect the final placings but certainly highlighted her determination to serve it right up to the boys – “ I’ve had a great day. I had no pressure on myself and knew I could easily be eliminated early on but as I kept progressing through the rounds it just became more fun out there for me. With the event running on my home beach I was happy to surf in it. “
Enever successfully surfed through 3 heats before today’s final, winning her opening round, winning her quarter final and advancing in 2nd place in her semi! Some of her wave scores included three excellent 8 point rides in these rounds which again highlighted her surfing levels!
“Surfing against the boys isn’t something I plan to keep doing, there’s more than enough great girl events for me but today’ s been fun. The boys didn’t go easy on me, in fact hassling for waves with them was hard work and maybe they went harder on me!”
The swells are expected to improve tomorrow and into the weekend which should be ideal for the Dakine Pro Junior which will showcase Australasia’s very best 20 year and under surfers. Bowen and Cathels are certain to be prominent in tomorrows opening rounds of the Dakine following today’s good warm up sessions for the main event. Enever has not entered the Pro Junior event!
