Tamaroa McComb crowned 2007 King of the Groms   > Francaise ci dessous, Portugues abaixo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 August, 2007 : - - Tahitian ripper Tamaroa McComb claimed the crown of the 2007 King of the Groms, international reference event for the under 16s. The Tahitian wunderkind featuring in the latest Young Guns 3 video follows in the steps of 2006 winner Dean Bowen (AUS) and adds his own name to the events 15 year history.

The young winner received his trophy from the hands of Jeremy Flores, twice winner himself of the event in 2000 and 2002. Jeremy is currently the sole surfer contesting the prestigious ASP WCT (World Championship Tour). The prize is a wildcard to take part to the trials of 2 of the most prestigious WCT events (The Quiksilver Pro France 2007 and the Quiksilver Pro Goldcoast 2008).

It is under bright sunshine and good surfing conditions that the final rounds of the King of the Groms 2007 started in the morning on the mobile site of la Piste, Capbreton. It was going to be a long day for he groms as they repeatedly surfed heat after heat from round 4 till the very final.

By the end of the afternoon, Garrett Parkes (AUS) and Tamaroa McComb (TAH) surfed it out in front of a massive crowd that came to watch an out of the ordinary final at Santocha beach, Capbreton. The two kept scoring waves higher and higher, making the final outcome impossible to guess. One must say they threw everything they had in this final heat, tired from 5 heats in the same day.

Tamaroa, hailing from Te Apaa Huahine, 15 years old, scored 9,73 and 8,9 points (18.63pts on a possible 20) to overcome the experienced Ozzy Garrett Parkes who managed to keep his energy under control throughout the day.

Jeremy Flores was watching the final revisiting the event animated by a new generation of surfers: “I’m really impressed by those kids’ evolution and surfing level. It does remind me of my early stages and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tamaroa on the WCT in little time.”

Frenchie Maxime Huscenot and Pierre Valentin Laborde did really well up to the quarter finals where they were ousted by Garrett Parkes (AUS) and Kiron Jabour (HAW) author of the two highest scoring heats of the event, actually scoring two 10 pointer waves!  Maxime said: “I’m rather happy about my week here. I finished fifth of the event. The others were older than me and Kiron technically better. I think I didn’t get the best waves either, and they did.”

This afternoon’s surprise, before the event’s final, was an expression session performed by Jeremy Flores and event godfather Jake “the Snake” Paterson. When a retired professional meets his younger peer from the elite WCT, the show is guaranteed. The crowd obviously enjoyed the display of high performance surfing on show.

Kiron Jabour e Vicente Romero garantem pódio
