Big Names are the convincing winners on day 1 of the Quiksilver State Titles - NSW

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 August, 2007 : - - Everyone knows there’s no shortage of quality surfers coming from the wave rich state of New South Wales (NSW). On day 1 of the Quiksilver State Titles – NSW it was the big names surfing their way to the big scores, showing they are up to the challenge of representing NSW at the Quiksilver Australian Grommet Titles in December this year in South Australia.

In the perfect 4 to 5 foot A-frame beach breaks on offer at Shelly Beach on the NSW Central Coast it was South Coast Surfer Owen Wright (Culburra Beach) who impressed the judges to claim a heat win despite having an interference called against him early in the heat.

After the heat Wright was understandably relieved and said “I knew that I had to surf solidly to get back in front after the interference, so I didn’t hold back and was lucky to get 2 good waves and get through. My tactic for the rest of contest will still not change, I aim to concentrate on wave selection and hopefully my surfing will do the rest.”

Other big names Garrett Parkes (Byron Bay) and Perth Standlick (Bondi Beach) claimed big heat wins and were definite standouts in their respective heats.

It was clear that Parkes would easily progress to Round 2 of competition after locking in an 8.65 with his first wave and finding a fast back up wave to lock in a combination of 16.15. Parkes progressed through with local Sam Patterson (Shelly Beach, Central Coast) who showed his local knowledge and progress after he was an alternative entry when another surfer did not show up for their heat.

Perth Standlick claimed the highest heat score of the day. Perth displayed his signature relaxed style using powerful fast turns on each of his scoring waves and was rewarded with a heat total of 16.65. “I enjoyed my heat out there today and my surfing is suited to these waves. The surf outlook looks consistent and I am really focused to get a good result so I can represent my state later in the year”.

Cabarita surfer Brent Savage was also a standout early today locking in an opening 8.5 ride and shortly after a strong 7 point ride to take a solid win over Davey Cathels (Narrabeen) who also progressed by placing 2nd in the four man heat

Satisfied with his win Savage said  “ This event is really important to me, it’s the pathway to the Australian Juniors and then the world juniors and that is my focus this year. Happy with that heat but there’s a long way to go and the field here is just so strong that every heat I have to be at my best.”

Although the big names of junior surfing locked in the huge heat totals there was great surfing on display from Coby Nau (Illawarra), Sam Wrench (Mollymook), Billy Kean (Sawtell), Bryce Young (Angourie) and Max Brokman (Queenscliff ) who were all deserving heat winners progressing into Round 2 which will be surfed first thing tomorrow morning.
