Day 2 of the Quiksilver State Titles - NSW

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 August, 2007 : - -  Amongst the action of day 2 at the Quiksilver State Titles – New South Wales (NSW) a fairytale story in the making caught the attention of surfers and onlookers.

In clean 3 feet waves at Shelly Beach, Bryce Young (Angourie) progressed into the quarter finals and went one step closer to follow in the big footsteps of his father Nat Young who was the 1964 NSW State Junior Title Champion.

Young showed his obvious class and talent today progressing through Round 2 and into the quarter finals by placing 2nd in his four man heat (1st and 2nd progress) behind high scoring heat winner  Owen Wright (Culburra Beach).

“Great to progress into the quarters especially because I had such a tough heat. I am going to have to take my surfing to the next level to reach my goal and follow in my Dad into the history books and become the NSW State Junior Champion, but that is something good for me to aim at!”

Just like his father Bryce is an outstanding junior longboard surfer as well and has no trouble mixing the two disciplines – “ I love surfing both long and shortboards and when I free surf I simply choose which boards to ride depending on how the surf is on the day – It’s great.”  Young’s dream goal here will be no easy feat as his main rivals continued their amazing surfing and locked in the best scores of the day.

The clear standout performer in the judge’s minds after 2 days of competition has been Perth Standlick (Bondi). He has had the highest heat totals for both day one and two of competition and progressed into the quarter finals easily after locking in a heat total of 16.25 today.

When asked about Standlick’s high heat scores, Head Judge Phil Courtney said “Perth uses full power and rail in all of his turns and maintains speed through transitions. He is a clear standout and event favorite in my mind, the only way I can see him being beaten is in a wave starved heat.”

Other surfers who will be competing tomorrow in the quarter finals after winning their round 2 heats today were Garrett Parkes (Byron Bay), Sam Wrench (Mollymook), Billy Kean (Sawtell), Chris Salisbury (Newport) and Davey Cathels (Narrabeen).

Under 16 Boys round two heats were also completed today good performances from local pair Dylan Cummings (Norah Head) and Troy Skillen (Soldiers Beach)  who placed 1st and 2nd respectively in their round two heat and in the process knocked out the number one seed, Oscar Scanes (Old Bar).

Girls under 18 and 16 will hit the water tomorrow along with many of the quarter finals of the boys and all finals will be surfed on Sunday.
