On The Edge Cape Cod Goes Off!
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 August, 2007 : - - The surf left much to be desired, but the desire of the competitors to make the most of the waves, made for a great contest. It was suppose to have gone off at Whitecrest Beach on Cape Cod, but for the first time in over 20 years, the sand bar was not workable for a contest. ESA officials shifted the event to the Narragansett Town beach, which provided small but adequate surf for the record 75 contestants. We were fortunate to have pulled this one off, said ESA Competition Director Mario Frade. All indications were for head high surf, but it never materialized. We got a big turnout because we have had to cancel three contests so far this summer. The big story was the always controversial Open Short board Division, where 25 of the top riders battled for ego rights.
After an array of semi -finals and semi main rounds, it came down to two women and four men in the finals. And no one could stop Little Compton's Ana Barend from finding the biggest and best sets of the heat. Narragansetts 12- year old surfing wonder, Carly Bennett was close behind, taking on a hot left slide into second place. The male contingent was left, literally in the rears of this final. The Menehune Final was a battle between the red hot Cob Ingalls of Little Compton, and the defending Menehune champion, Chad Bruce of Scituate Massachusetts. Ingalls huge cutbacks in the shore pound clinched it. Another up and coming Little Compton star, Ed Barend, took the 3rd spot Veteran Nantasket Beach rider, John Ryan topped the Boys Final, with Narragansett's Matt Nota coming on strong in the last three minutes of the heat.

His brother Andy finished in the 3rd spot. North Kingstowns Ross Ahlborg protected his turf, as he carved up a neat inside left barrel, and almost pulled off a 360, enroute to an easy win over Portsmouths Wade Madden and Hull star, Luke Ryan. Narragansetts Mary Rand was on a red hot streak, as she found a solid face and pumped down the line to take the Junior Womens title over North Kingstowns Katie Zullo.
Narragansetts Diana Bennett found a rare left barrel to top her sister, Carly, in the Girls Final. Wakefields Jeff Benoit won the Mens Final in his first contest, while Bristols Nick Carter took the Masters shortboard crown. Narragansetts Mike Salvadore topped the Grandmasters, while teammate Peter Pan found one big right wall to win the Legends shortboard event.
Cape Codder Katie Ryan took the Womens title, while Little Comptons resident pro, Ana Barend won the Senior Womens crown. Cambridge, Mass. Grand Legend Kitty Pechet took that title with ease. 2007 Northeast Regionals champion Chuck Barend of Little Compton continued undefeated in the Senior Mens division, as he topped Cape Cod champion Brendan McCray with an array of in the pocket? moves. Connecticuts Ron Belanger took the 3rd spot.
In the long board events, it was even tougher. John Ryan won the Menehune event with lots of style on the nose. His brother Luke topped Little Comptons Patrick Brown for the Junior crown, with a solid hang five on the tip, right into the shorebreak. Ron Belanger was the class of the highly competitive Masters Longboard Division. He locked the final heat up with a dramatic Helicopter 360 that was completed in the white water.
Chuck Barend took the 2nd spot, followed by Eric Webber. Narragansetts Mary Rand continued to dominate the Gansett tinies, as she powered her way to another win in the Women's Longboard Final, edging out veteran Nora Vasconcellos of Pembroke, Massachusetts. Ana Barend's switch foot antics gave her the win in the Senior Women's event. In the final heat of the day, it was Narragansett veteran Peter Pan topping Doug Ofiara of Scarborough, Maine for the crown, pumping a miniscule peak into the sand. Boston's Pat Redmond continued to remain undefeated in the Open Bodyboard division, dazzling the crowd with an array of el rollos in the seaweed filled shore pound.
The next ESA event will take place at the Narragansett Town Beach on September 1st, 2007, in conjunction with the Town of Narragansett Labor Day Surf Games.
