Owen Wright stamps his authority as boys finals are decided in perfect conditions

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 August, 2007 : - - Shelly Beach on the NSW Central Coast has provided the Quiksilver State Titles – New South Wales (NSW) with perfect conditions for competition so far and day three was no exception. Perfect 4 to 5 feet A-frame waves greeted competitors and contest organizers were quick to get the first heat in the water.

To make the most of the perfect conditions the Under 18 and 16 Boys quarter finals were surfed and then both divisions were sent out again for their semi final.

The next generation reveled in the amazing conditions on offer and showed that the future of Australian surfing is in good hands. Owen Wright (Culburra Beach), Chris Salisbury (Newport Beach), Sam Lendrum (Nords Wharf) and Sam Wrench (Mollymook) all had exceptional semi finals and will surf for the title of Quiksilver  NSW State Champion under 18  on Sunday.

In the first semi final Owen Wright had to step up after a shaky quarter final where he only just progressed in second place. From the outset it was clear he was in a different mindset laying down a commanding 16.50 which left the other surfers to fight for second place which was claimed by Chris Salisbury.

“I made the mistake of waiting for the waves to come to me in my quarter final and it almost cost me the title. I will not make that mistake again and I was stoked to put down a solid heat tally in the semi final which  has put me in the right mind set for the final. My aim this year is to emulate what I achieved in the Under 16 division which was to win State, Australian and world titles.”

Semi Final number two was a very tight affair and saw the surprise exit of event standout Perth Standlick (Bondi) and the rise of Sam Lendrum who had flown under the radar until this point. Lendrum locked in a heat total of 14.90 and showed that he is a serious contender for the title as he progressed with Sam Wrench.

The Under 16 Boys final was also decided with two Newcastle surfers Jake Sylvester (Bar Beach) and Ryan Callinan (Merewether) in amazing form in their semi final. They progressed into the final with local Troy Skillen (Toukley, Central Coast) and Sydney surfer Billy Bain (Avalon Beach).

The under 18 girls surfed their first round of competition and the usual standouts Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa), Kirby Wright (Culburra Beach) Stephanie Sallis (Byron Bay), Kristie Jones (Ulladulla), Heidi Hamester (Collaroy) and Laura Enever (North Narrabeen) did not disappoint winning won their round one heats and progressing into the quarter finals.
