SURFING AMERICA UNVEILS EXPANDED COACHING AND TRAINING PROGRAM FOR USA SURF TEAM ATHLETES

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 August, 2007 : - - San Juan Capistrano, Ca -- Fresh on the heels of its appointment of Mike Parsons as Program Director for the USA Surf Team and Joey Buran as its Head Coach, Surfing America, the National Governing Body for Surfing in the USA, announced a new, improved training program for USA Surf Team athletes.

“This is where the USA Surf Team program kicks into high gear,” said Surfing America Executive Director Mike Gerard.  “Surfing America has put a lot of thought into creating ways to involve our athletes in a comprehensive, year-round training and development program.

Just as the surf industry came together in support of our kids, now we have some of the greatest surfers of all time stepping up to enhance this new era of conditioning so that our team will perform at its peak when we represent the United States in international competition.”

Surfing America’s expanded training program will include a minimum of two weeks of organized coaching prior to the 2008 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in May for USA Surf Team athletes, addressing the following key areas: sports psychology, physical fitness and nutrition, technical surf training with video analysis, competition and heat strategies, and judging criteria.

Head Coach Joey Buran has already held training sessions with current and potential team members.  Throughout September and October he plans to hold sessions around the country by traveling to the East Coast and Hawaii along with continuing his California workouts.  This extensive evaluation will give extra insight towards the selection of the 2008 USA Surf Team at the team trials in Huntington Beach October 29th and 30th.

“I have really enjoyed working with and evaluating some of the nation’s top talent,” said Buran.  “I’m confident that we will have the best surfers from all the member organizations represented at the SIMA Surfing America USA Championships and the team trials.  This all-inclusive representation will ultimatly insure that we select the very best junior team possible to represent the United States of America.“

Once the 2008 team is selected, the focus will then shift to training and preparation of the team.  Athletes will attend the Dino and Snips Surf Academy from November 12 – 16th, 2007 in Mexico where Mike Parsons and Dino Andino will focus on competitive strategies as well as style and technique.

Through coordination with Buran, former surfing champions will also donate their time to the 2008 USA Surf Team.  World Champions Shaun Tomson, Martin Potter, CJ Hobgood and Lisa Andersen are among the A-list of surfing legends helping the USA Surf Team to achieve true greatness at the highest level of the sport.

In January and February, the training will intensify with weekly practices on the West Coast, training sessions in Hawaii and an Official Training Camp in Southern California.

As part of the USA Surf Team Training Camp, Kenny Nitta and Ryan Campbell of OC Fitness Solutions LLC and creators of Boardfit will guide each athlete through a surfing-specific cross-training fitness program aimed to increase core strength along with most of the muscles used while surfing.  Boardfit's fitness program will include a three month training program as the athletes prepare to reach "peak" fitness at the ISA event.

"We are stoked to be a part of this new program.  Our goal is help Team USA prevent injuries and increase power with a safe and effective training program,” said Kenny Nitta.

Ryan Campbell backs up that notion, “In order to become a great athlete, Kenny and I believe there must be an understanding of how the body works in performance and we are here to encourage that among the rising stars of Surfing America.”

Nitta and Campbell have over 22 years of combined experience in training top-level athletes.  "It's a complete year-round training program," added Gerard.  "All bases are covered.  And with Joey Buran and Mike Parsons steering the ship, we're sure to see some tremendous results moving forward."
