Billabong British Junior Champs set for Widemouth Bay

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 September, 2007 : - - Young British surfers across the country are putting in hours of training in preparation for the 2007 Billabong British Junior Championships.  The teams at the British Surfing Association (BSA) and sponsors Billabong, Calypso and North Cornwall District Council are also planning the final arrangements and preparing themselves for what is expected to be the biggest ever entry.

The championships, widely recognised as one of the key events on the British surf calendar and selection event for the World Junior Surfing Games 2008, will take place on 15th and 16th September at Widemouth Bay in Bude in North Cornwall.

Last year saw Tom Butler from Newquay and local Bude boy Reubyn Ash battle it out but it was Tom that showed stunning form in heavy waves to be crowned junior champion. This year, Tom will be back to regain his title but Reubyn is now too old for the Junior category so the competition is on!

2006 saw the largest ever entry with over 160 surfers traveling from all over the country to compete for this major title and, with the continual growth of British competitive surfing, the BSA is expecting an even bigger entry this year.  The event includes 6 divisions including Under 12s, Under 14s, Under 16, Under 18, Under 14 girls and Under 18 girls.  Over £1,500 is up for grabs as well as lots of Billabong and Kustom Goodies.

Karen Walton, National Director, BSA said, “Year-on-year, The Billabong British Juniors is a great event and last year’s phenomenal entry and gripping final illustrated just how strong the enthusiasm is at this level.  Surfers, their families and sponsors travel from all over the country and Bude makes an ideal setting for this important competition.

The results will have a heavy bearing on the selection process for the World Junior Surfing Games next year meaning that all of the winners are likely to score themselves a double victory and have the chance to represent their country at the highest level.”

Sam Carrier, Surf Marketing Coordinator at Billabong Europe, commented, “Supporting junior surfing is what our brand is all about and the British Junior Championships is the perfect place to see our most talented and determined young surfers giving their all for this important title. We’re looking forward to a great weekend of surfing and wish all the competitors the best of luck.” Anyone wishing to enter should contact the BSA on 01637 876474.
