Western Province reclaim the Freedom Cup and produce three champions at the O'Neill SA Junior Champs

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 October, 2007 : - - Western Province reclaimed the Freedom Cup in fine style on the final day of the O'Neill SA Junior Championships in Port Elizabeth Sunday (September 30) when they convincingly beat the defending champions KwaZulu-Natal by over 7000 points.

Western Province also won the Best Team Trophy for their genuine team spirit and support of each other throughout the championships. The Freedom Cup victory was due to a concerted effort by the whole team but was secured by the eight WP finalists, three of whom went on to win their respective divisions.

WP star Tarryn Chudleigh made history by taking the U18 girls title and becoming the only girl to have won the U14, U16 and U18 divisions. Chudleigh beat Chantelle Rautenbach of Boland in the final with defending champion Nikita Robb of Border in third and Adele Nortje of Southern Cape fourth.

The 2006 U14 and U12 champions, Mikey February and Max Armstrong respectively, successfully defended their titles. February overcame EP's Steven Sawyer, fellow WP surfer Jarred Veldhuis and David Van Zyl of KZN while Armstrong powered to a 17 point heat score and kept the blue and white striped WP flag flying proudly by beating Diran Zakarian of Boland, Dylan Lightfoot of EP and Daniel Buitendag of Southern Cape.

2007 National Junior Team captain Klee Strachan of Southern KZN added the U18 title to his U14 and U16 titles when he beat Kyle Beach of KZN, Kyle Galloway of Border and Justin Grey of EP and SA Junior Team vice captain, Shaun Joubert of Southern Cape, won the U16 division when he beat Brendon Gibbens of WP, Dale Staples of Southern Cape and Matthew Bromley of WP respectively.

Surfer of the Contest Bianca Buitendag of Southern Cape posted a huge score of 17,25 to win the U14 girls division from KZN's Sarah Baum, Cara MacDonald of Border and Heidi Palmboom of KZN.

Alice Macgregor of Border took honours in the U16 Final beating Tanika Hoffman and Holly Armstrong of WP and Faye Zoetmulder of Eastern Province while Carryn MacNicol earned Southern KZN their second title when she won the U12 girls division, beating Nicole Pallet of KZN, Jenna Van der Au of Southern Cape and Paige Meecham of Border in the final.

The Zigzag Blowing Up Award and R1000 was presented to 10 year old Umzumbe surfer Simo Mkhize of  the SA Development Team, the Most Improved Surfer was Papi Makhanyani of the SA Development Team and the Sportsmanship trophy was awarded to event hosts, Eastern Province Surfing Council.

The five day 2007 O'Neill South African Junior Championships began in gale force onshore winds last Wednesday (September 26) but the balance of the tournament took place in 2-4 foot offshore surf.

The event was first held in 1996 and is the most important contest for junior surfers in South Africa. It not only determines National Champions in the Under 18, Under 16, Under 14 and Under 12 boys and girls age divisions but also determines the winning provincial team each year.

The Final results and pictures of the 2007 O'Neill SA Junior Championships are available on www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za.
