Naomi Stevic Rules Roost On Day Two At Brothers Neilsen Junior Surf Challenge
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 October, 2007 : - - Queensland's next generation of surf stars continued to impress on day two of the Brothers Neilsen Junior Surf Challenge on the Sunshine Coast today, raising the high performance bar set on the opening day of competition.
Awakening to a pristine morning with clean 3ft contestable conditions, contest organisers yet again relocated to Coolum Beach with the re-qualification rounds of the U/18 and U/16 boys’ divisions along with the opening heats of the U/18, U/16 and U/14 girls donning competition rash vests. The Sunshine Coast’s hottest female surfers dominated proceedings, taking full advantage of their home turf advantage.
Queensland U/16 girls’ champion Naomi Stevic (Sunrise Beach) set the pace for the day, letting loose a polished display of copybook backhand surfing in the opening round of the U/16 girls’ division. The 15-year-old was in a league of her own; trumping Charlie Roach (Maroochydore) and Gemma McCallum (Mudjimba) with effortless ease.
Stevic jumped out of the gates early in the twenty-minute heat, jagging a set wave before attacking a right-hand peak to bits to snare a heat-high 7.00 on her opening ride. The stylish goofy foot put the result beyond doubt, netting a 6.33 in the closing stages of the heat to finish with a two-wave total of a 14.17 to Roach’s 7.50.
Not resting on her laurels, Stevic upped-the-ante in her round two heat coming-from-behind to advance directly through to the final. Wave selection proved valuable for Stevic, waiting until the dying stages of the heat to snare an 8.67 and with it the win. Final Scores: Stevic 11.64, Ashley Goodall 10.93, Charlie Roach 7.67 and Dana McNeven 5.60.
Buderim surfing star Dimity Stoyle was unable to step-up to the level set by Stoyle, going down to 2006 Queensland U/18 girls’ champion Tiana McNeven (Tugun) and Sine McGregor in round two of the U/18 girls. Fortunately for Stoyle, she was able to qualify for the U/18 girl’s final, finishing in front of Bridey McNeven (Tugun) in the sudden-death requalification round.
Other heat winners today included Khan Thorne (Palm Beach), Regan Fredricks (Kingscliff), Nick McDonald (Caloundra), Jayson Homan (Noosa), Thomas Cervi (Noosa) and Lachlan O’Neil (Snapper Rocks).
The Brothers Neilsen Junior Surf Challenge will continue tomorrow morning with round two of the both U/16 and U/18 boys’ advanced divisions along with the opening round of the U/12 boys. Also, look out for the U/14 boys’ round two and the U/12 boys’ requal 1.
The five-day tournament is being run by the second chance Surfing Australia format and guarantees all surfers at least two surfs. Divisions; including Boys U/18 and U/16 advanced, Boys U/18 and U/16 intermediate, Boys U/14, Boys U/12, Girls U/18, Girls U/16 along with Girls U/14 will be surfed. The main contest site is Maroochydore beach, but the event does have the option of going mobile from Alexandra Headlands to Peregian Beach.
