Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 October, 2007 : - - Top professional surfers and a strong contingent from the Santa Cruz area will converge on Steamer Lane, Santa Cruz, Calif. to compete in the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), 4-Star O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep Oct. 9-14, 2007 for a $75,000 prize purse in the final WQS event on the U.S. mainland.
The O’Neill Cold Water Classic is also the final stop of the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep and will determine the 2007 Trifecta champion and prize payout of $36,000. The O’Neill Cold Water Classic will run in conjunction with the Grade-3 Oakley Pro Junior ASP North American Championships with an elite field vying for crucial points toward the ASP year-end rankings, part of a $15,000 prize purse and the Trifecta prize purse.
Standouts in the field of WQS competitors include: #1 WQS ranked Jordy Smith (Durban, SAF), Roy Powers (Kauai, HI), Patrick Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), Mike Todd (Laguna Beach, CA), Brett Simpson (Huntington Beach, CA), Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, CA), Ian Walsh (Maui, HI), Jesse Merle-Jones (Kauai, HI), Shaun Ward (Huntington Beach, CA), Nathan Yeomans (San Clemente, CA), Mike Losness (San Clemente, CA) and Sunny Garcia (Oahu, HI).
The Oakley Pro Junior will feature 48 top surfers, under the age of 20, including: Cory Arrambide (Ventura, CA), Adam Wickwire (Satellite Beach, FL), Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL), Chris Waring (Seal Beach, CA), Nick Rozsa (Oxnard, CA) and wildcards Brent Dorrington (Gold Coast, AUS) and Sebastian Zietz (Hanalei, HI).

A series of low pressure systems have developed in the far northern reaches of the Gulf of Alaska sending small to moderate pulses of very northerly angled swell south towards the Santa Cruz area, with limited energy wrapping into the Lane. More of the same is forecast for the start of the contest window.
Tuesday (10/9): Northerly swell of 4 ft @ 10-11 secs expected producing faces in the 3.5-4.0 ft range coming from 310 degrees. Winds possibly building from the south to 15 kts late as the first cold front of the season approaches with bump building
Wednesday (10/10): Westerly swell expected at 5.5 ft @ 10 secs producing 4.0-4.5 ft faces coming from 280 degrees. SW winds fading from 10 kts early. Morning sickness but fading
Thursday (10/11): Northerly swell 4 ft @ 10-11 secs mixing with westerly windswell 4 ft @ 9 secs producing 4.5+ ft faces. Light winds 5 kts from the NW/glassy.
