Chemspec Durban Surfing Junior Provincial Championships hailed as a remarkable success

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 October, 2007 : - - The ChemSpec Durban Surfing Junior Provincial Championships, which was completed in difficult surf at Durban's New Pier Sunday (October 14), has been hailed as a remarkable success by organisers and the host province, KZN.

Ray de Vries, the spokesman for Chemspec Durban Surfing, was pleased with every aspect of the tournament and said after the completion of the finals “Over the three days we had thousands of people watching surfing of the finest standard”.

A visiting Reunion Island team performed well with sisters Panzini and Defay Johanne winning the U16 and U14 girls’ finals respectively while Jannier Lucas and Jannier Martin came third in the U12 and U14 boys’ finals respectively and Vlaudin Joic secured fourth place in the competitive U16 boys division. .

Reunion Island team manager, Fabrice Fridmann was stoked that his surfers were involved in the JPC, saying “This was a very well organised contest. Our surfers appreciate the friendliness and tough competition. We are in the process of sending an official invitation to South Africa to send a team as well as a development team to Reunion for a few competitions”.

Surfing South Africa included a Lotto Future Stars team of 15 surfers drawn from all parts of South Africa in the Chemspec JPC. One of the Future Stars surfers was ten year old Simo Mkhize of Umzumbe who captured the attention of everyone at the event with his determination and obvious talent as he surfed his way into fourth place in the U12 Boys final.

The Lotto Future Stars team was made up of surfers drawn from Surfing South Africa's transformation and development initiatives and Surfing South Africa General Manager Robin de Kock was pleased that they were able to compete in the JPC. "The Future Stars concept is a talent identification initiative which is aimed at giving those surfers who have come through our various programmes the opportunity to compete in high profile events.

We are grateful to KZN Surfing Association and ChemSpec for allowing the Lotto Future Stars to participate in the JPC. Surfing South Africa looks forward to being able to involve other Future Stars teams in contests in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape before the end of the year".

After three days of competition eight finals were held and in the U12 girls division, recently crowned SA Champion Carryn MacNicol of SKZN took honours ahead of KZN surfer Nicole Pallet. Slade Prestwich won the U12 division beating another KZN surfer, JJ Harris, into second place and U14 boys’ title also went the way of KZN where David van Zyl beat teammate Mikey Venter into second spot.

U14 girls’ honours went the way of Reunion's Defay Johanne with Heidi Palmboom of KZN taking second spot and in the U16 Boys final an in form Devin Lane posted a narrow 0.1 point victory over fellow KZN surfer Beyrick de Vries when he caught a scoring ride in the last seconds of the heat. Future Stars surfer Holly Armstrong came second behind Reunion girl Panzini Johanne in the U16 girls final.

The U18 boys division was won by newly crowned SA Champion Klee Strachan who beat Chad du Toit of KZN by over two points in the final and Michelle Imeson beat KZN teammate Amber Kilfoil in the U18 girls final. Honours in the exciting Tag Team contest went the way of KZN 1 who beat KZN 2, Reunion and the Future Stars in the forty five minute final.

The recently announced sponsorship of KwaZulu-Natal Surfing by ChemSpec has already elevated the stakes in the KZN region with the running of the successful 2007 JPC at the weekend and the good news is that a number of new contests are already being planned for the region.
