Paddleboarding Showcased For First Time in SA at South Coast Surf Carnival
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 October, 2007 : - - The historic Hawaiian sport of paddleboarding will be showcased for the first time ever in South Africa at the South Coast Surf Carnival sponsored by the Ugu-South Coast Tourism Board and presented by Jeep Apparel and Independent on Saturday on November 3 and 4.
Scottburgh beach will come alive with a fresh line up of new events such as kiteboarding, kiteflying, swimming clinics, development surfing lessons and the biggest pro longboarding event held in Africa.
Top waterman Jason Ribbink (Durban) will be the star of the show in the paddleboarding demonstration riding waves on the large board steering only with an oar. Paddleboarding has taken off overseas with big wave surfers like Laird Hamilton breathing life back into the traditional Hawaiian sport of wave riding which has helped to shape modern day surfing.
“It is the most fun I have had wave riding in years and I think that the South Coast Surf Carnival is the perfect platform to showcase this unique, soulful and fun sport,” commented Ribbink. Members of the public will have the opportunity to test out paddleboarding on specially made Bilt paddleboards.
The South Coast Surf Carnival has cemented itself as one of KZN’s premier festivals and attracts large crowds to the mid-south coast to enjoy world class watersports action.
The fifth annual festival offers free Ocean Splash swimming clinics which will equip participants with basic swimming skills in the surf, water safety and beach awareness. The Ocean Splash clinics are designed to target youngsters. The Point Surf Academy will once again hold development surfing clinics. Participants will be in good hands with top coaches Shaun Hague and local hero Cyril Mquadi supervising the lessons.
Windsong Kites will be responsible for impressive kiteflying shows with their most eye-catching kites on display. The South Coast Surf Carnival is organised by Nerve Events and sponsored by the Ugu-South Coast Tourism Board in association with Jeep Apparel and Independent on Saturday. Sub sponsors to this event are Pepsi, Nestle Pure life water, Bavaria, Bokomo, Pick n Pay Scottburgh, Cyclone Kiteboarding, Ocean 2 Air Kiteboarding and Bilt surfboards.
