Estoril Coast Pro 3 star WQS comes to Cascais Portugal

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 October, 2007 : - - Cascais, in Portugal, will receive the Estoril Coast Pro, the last European stage of the World Qualifying Series (WQS), a 3 star event, with US$50.000 prize-money.  Held between the 2nd and the 4th of November, the Estoril Coast Pro is the last contest of the renewed ASP European Tour – since in 2007 all Europe WQS stages counts towards the European ratings – and also this is the last WQS event held in Portugal.

The event has its main site at Carcavelos beach but, as always, with Guincho as an alternative spot, as organizer António Pedro, from Alfarroba, explains. “Finally we have managed one of the best surf areas in Portugal, to receive an international surf contest, which has not happened for more than ten years.

Despite this being one of the best times of the year to get good waves at Carcavelos, we always keep an alternative open, in case all odds fail. Guincho is a great second choice, as it’s having great waves since the beginning of the Autumn and it usually does well when things fail in Carcavelos.”

Running this event for the first time, António Pedro couldn’t be more enthusiastic about it. “We’re very proud about closing the European leg of the WQS and crowning the European Champion in Portuguese waters.”

While the tour is in the Canary Islands, before heading to Portugal, everything is still open with this year’s title. Young Aritz Aranburu leads the ratings, with French surfer Tim Boal in second place, followed by German athlete Marlon Lipke, in third. But there’re other contenders in the title race, like Eneko Acero, Jonathan Gonzalez or Michel Bourez.

Portuguese surfers also run the European Tour, but none of them is doing very well this year – Justin Mujica won the Tour in 2004, but is 16th right now, followed by national champion Ruben Gonzalez, in the 20th spot.

Meanwhile, this event is a big step for other athletes, like national Top 5 surfer Alexandre Ferreira. “This contest is very important for us, Portuguese surfers that don’t go to all the European events, because we can surf with the best European surfers and try our luck. Besides, it’s right next door!”, tells us this athlete from Estoril, that expects to see a lot of Portuguese surfers doing well at this contest.

So, all is set for the Estoril Coast Pro, next 2nd, 3rd and 4th of November, at Cascais, an event that will put the Estoril Coast in the international surfing map once again. The contest will have live streaming at: http://surf.sapo.pt and www.aspeurope.com . Estoril Coast Pro is organized by Alfarroba, along with main sponsors Junta de Turismo da Costa do Estoril and Câmara Municipal de Cascais, and co-sponsor Rip Curl.

Also important is support coming from Red Bull, Sapo.pt, Microsoft, Polen Surfboards, Fonte Viva, LG Computers, Triumph Motorcycles, Konica Minolta, Surfrider Foundation Europe, Buondi, B!, Fiat, Nokia and Association of Surfing Professionals Europe. To help on the event’s diffusion, we count on Antena 3, Correio da Manhã, Sport Tv, Record, RTP, Surf Portugal, Sport Life, Surf.Sapo.Pt, Conquilha.Com, Hi-Life.Tv and magazine PcMais.
