Oakley Secures Queensland's Richest Ever Pro Junior Surfing Tournament At Nth Stradbroke Island
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 November, 2007 : - - International brand Oakley is proud to announce that it has inked a deal securing one of Australia's richest Pro Junior surfing tournaments at the island jewel of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland in 2008.
The ASP Australasian 9-star rated Oakley Pro Junior, running from Feb 5-10 and boasting $30,000 (AUD) in prize money, offers a world-class field of 132 surfers aged 20-years and under a chance to compete at one of Queensland’s most isolated wave havens.
North Stradbroke Island; with its multiple world-class wave breaks, will provide an ideal battleground for the who’s who of world surfing, contestants coming from as far a field as Bali, Tahiti, Hawaii, Japan, Europe and the USA to compete for the $7000 winner's cheque. An upgraded 3,500 rating points is also up for grabs for the eventual champion!
“We are stoked to be putting on a Pro junior event, especially one at North Stradbroke Island. We are hoping that the event attracts a swag of international surfers as well as the top Australians," said Oakley’s Australian Sports Marketing Manager Luke Watson.
“This event is the first of 6 Oakley pro junior events throughout the world including Sth Africa, Brazil, USA, Japan and Europe. The first and second place getters in each event will be taken to a secret location to battle it out for more cash and a major prize which is still to be announced.”
Similarly, Surfing Queensland’s CEO Andrew Stark believes the new-look tournament will elevate pro junior surfing to a new status. “Surfing Queensland is extremely excited to play host to the highest rated and equal richest ASP boy's Pro Junior event as part of the annual ASP Australasia Junior Series," he said.
"This is a solid opportunity for Queensland pro junior surfers to battle it out against the very best surfers from around the world at the famous breaks of North Straddie. This event will provide outstanding surfing development outcomes for not only Queensland however importantly the regional area of North Strdabroke Island,” added Stark.
‘Nth Straddy’ has had a long connection with Queensland surfing, acting as a wave magnet for surfers keen on barrelling waves as well as spawning several surfing champions. Born-and-bred world tour ace Bede Durbidge honed his surfing act on the long point break waves of Cylinder along with the punchy beach breaks of Main Beach.
Adding to the event’s already high stakes is a stellar line-up of the country’s hottest surfers including Sunshine Coast surfing ace Julian Wilson (Coolum, QLD, AUS), Queensland young gun Brent Dorrington (Coolangatta, QLD, AUS), no.3 rated junior Heath Joske (Nambucca Heads, NSW, AUS), Gold Coast ripper Brendan Leckie (Palm Beach, QLD, AUS) and South Coast sensation Owen Wright (Culburra, NSW, AUS)
However, top ranked competitors won’t be able to rest on their laurels with a swag of the island’s best junior surfers including Lincoln Taylor, Ash McDonald and Tim McDonald keen to outdo their more fancied foes.
What’s more, one lucky member of the local Point Lookout Boardriders club will receive a wildcard in the top seeded round of the exclusive tournament courtesy of Oakley.
The Oakley Pro Junior is the 4th of 12 stops on the 2008 ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series and offers a six-day surfing window, from Tuesday 5th February to Sunday 10th February, 2008, for only four days of competition surfing. The main event site will be at Cylinder Beach, however the tournament has the option of going to the best surf from Adder Rock to Main Beach.
