HEATHER CLARK IN A LEAGUE OF HER OWN AT ROXY WAHINE CUP

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 December, 2007 : - - Heather Clark (Port Shepstone) was in a league of her own when she surfed to  a spectacular victory in the Roxy Wahine Cup presented by Virgin Mobile in association with Resolution Health at Suncoast Beach in Durban on December 2. The event was the first on Durban’s 2007 Summer Season Calendar.

Hundreds of spectators gathered on the lawn at Suncoast to watch the open,  U18, U16, U14 and novice finals of the ninth edition of SA’s premier stand-alone women’s surfing contest. Former World Championship Tour surfer Clark showed her fifteen years of international experience; she was untouchable from the start of the open women’s final catching her first wave as the siren sounded.

Within less than three minutes she had amassed a heat tally of over 13 points out of a possible 20. Clark scored a near perfect 9 out of a possible ten points for three powerful backhand turns. She cemented her win with a 7-point ride to finish with an impressive 16 out of a possible 20 points.

”I have not surfed the Roxy Wahine Cup for seven years as I have always been overseas competing. I am so stoked that I won today, I got the 1000 Pro Surf Tour Points that I needed and R10 000 to spend just before Christmas. I’ve dedicated my win to my mom who has been going through a tough time after her recent bout in hospital,” commented Clark.

Plucky U14 surfer and Roxy team rider Sarah Baum (Athlone Park) performed exceptionally well in the open women’s division against some girls almost twice her age to finish second with a heat total of 9.40. Kommetjie’s Tarryn Chudleigh surfed consistently well throughout the event to finish third overall in the prestigious 3A rated Surfing South Africa Pro Surf Tour event with Bianca Buitendag (Victoria Bay) in fourth.

The U18 final saw a close tussle for first place between Chantel Rautenbach (Melkbosstrand) and Nikita Robb (East London). Rautenbach finished with 13 points out of a possible 20 with Rob breathing down her neck scoring a total  of 12.75. Tarryn Chudleigh (Kommetjie) took third place away from Michelle Imeson (Warner Beach) who placed fourth.

Sibling rivalry was the order of the day in the U16 final with twins Alice and Laurie Mc Gregor (East London) battling it out for top honours. The lead exchanged hands several times during the final and ultimately Laurie Mc Gregor took the runner up slot ahead of Holly Armstrong (Melkbosstrand) and Kirsty Delport (Berea) who placed third and fourth.

Sarah Baum (Athlone Park), who finished second in the open division, was the star of the show in the U14 final with her progressive manoeuvres and focused surfing. Bianca Buitendag (Victoria Bay), who also featured in the open division final, snatched second place from Heather Klug (Durban) who squeezed past Carryn Mac Nicol (Bazley Beach) to finish third.

The novice final which catered for newcomers to the sport saw Lauren Coleby (Bluff) claim the coveted prize of a year’s sponsorship from Roxy for winning with 10.5 out of 20 points. Janelle Rademeyer (Scottburgh) took second ahead of rising stars Gina Smith (East London) and Inge Mc Laren (East London) who placed third and fourth respectively.

”The ninth edition of the Roxy Wahine Cup went very smoothly, we had so many spectators on the beach for the final and the overall vibe was excellent. Suncoast is a brilliant venue to stage an event like this and we were really impressed by the standard of women’s surfing this year,”commented Roxy Marketing Manager Natasha Bellingan.
