Bells Fires as International Surfers set the Pace on Day One of the Kustom Jetty Surf Pro Junior

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 January, 2008 : - - The best young surfers from around the world enjoyed the great summer waves on offer at Bells Beach today for day 1 of the Kustom Jetty Surf Pro Junior with high scoring winning performances from Richard Christie (NZ), Toby Donachie (UK), Tamaroa McComb (Tahiti), Granger Larson (Hawaii) and Klee Strachan (Sth Africa).

For many of the visiting internationals this was their first taste of the famous Bells Beach break and they clearly relished the opportunity with impressive wins and the internationals dominated the day.

Toby Donachie (UK/Cornwell) had a high scoring win over Jerome Forest (Aus/WA) and commented after his heat win saying “I absolutely love it here, Bells and Winky Pop are fantastic waves and you can really do big turns on these waves – I never really expected Bells to be so good at this time of the year as I thought it was more a winter wave but yesterday and today have been incredible!”

New Zealand National Champion Richard Christie showed his class by pulling several successful big aerial moves to take a convincing win over Tom Clarke (WA). Christie is no stranger to Bells having competed very successfully last year on the Pro Junior circuit with his best results also at this beach.

“ I like the Bells waves for sure – we have very similar waves at my home town in Gisborne and the water temperature is also very similar – This is hopefully a big year for me on the Pro Junior Circuit and today was a good start to the season – both waves and my own personal performance – I hope I can keep it up!”

While the internationals dominated most heats, the highest scoring single wave of the day went to Sydney surfer Wylie Moyes (Bronte) who scored an excellent 8.5 ride on a solid 2m Bells wave early in the day – Moyes also took the honours for the highest heat tally of the day with 15.5 out of a possible 20 in his big win over fellow Sydney surfer David Vlug who advanced in 2nd place in the four surfer heat format.

“Great waves that really suit my backhand surfing – what can I say other than that’s the best heat I’ve had out here and I hope the waves stay big and this good throughout the event!”

Local surfers also performed well today – Tom Allen (Jan Juc), Cahill Bell Warren (Bells Beach), James Healy (Airey’s Inlet)  and Tom Edgar (Jan Juc) all surfed well to advance to tomorrows round two heats which are certain to be a much tougher prospect for all surfers with the introduction of the top seeds.

These top seeds include all of Australia’s and many of the world’s best 20 year and under surfers and include Julian Wilson (Qld), Owen Wright (NSW), Heath Joske (NSW) and Carl Wright (VIC). Waves are expected to remain quite good tomorrow and the action begins around 8:00am with the most likely venue being Bells Beach.
