Top Seed Julian Wilson, Focused on a Win at the Kustom Jetty Surf Pro Junior

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 January, 2008 : - - Sunshine Coast surfer Julian Wilson made his intentions very clear that he’s here to win the Kustom Jetty Surf Pro Junior by posting the day’s highest heat scoring win in round two. Wilson scored two excellent rides of an 8.65 and an 8.25 to demolish his opponents in what was a very methodical and professional display.

“Yep, I’m keen to take this out for sure – I feel very confident – I was surfing well at the world juniors but went down in the quarter finals up there and now I simply want to get on with it and win here – Unfortunately Jan Juc isn’t my favourite wave in the world, I’d much prefer surfing Bells but the nature of the sport is that you have to perform in all conditions and if you choose the right waves there’s reasonable scoring potential.”

Fellow Queensland surfer Nick Vasicek (Coolangatta) was also in great form today scoring an 8.35 and 7 point ride in his big win over talented Sydney surfer Davey Cathels.

“ It’s always good to win through these early rounds and as the opening event of the season I’m keen to get a strong result here whatever the conditions – there were some fun peaky waves out there but it certainly wasn’t as good as Bells Beach yesterday but I’ll surf whatever the event serves up!”

The Surfcoast swells dropped fairly dramatically overnight following yesterdays excellent waves at Bells Beach and windswept 1m waves at Jan Juc Beach today certainly tested the adaptability of the top seeded surfers today.

Local surfers again had a good day lead by Cahill Bell-Warren who won a tightly fought out loaded round two heat. Bell –Warren started slowly today but found his waves late in the heat to move from 4th to 1st defeating French surfer Maxime Huscenot with the two seeded surfers in Ty Watson (NSW) and Teale Vanner (SA) eliminated from the event.

“I knew I was in for a tough heat when I saw the draw but I’ve surfed Jan Juc a lot and simply had to find the right waves, luckily late in the heat those waves came through and I made the most of them. There’s a long way to go in this event and the heats only get harder each round.”

Ocean Grove’s Josh Johnston Baxter and Jan Juc’s Todd Rosewell also progressed placing 2nd in their respective heats. Not so fortunate was Tom Edgar (Jan Juc) and Campbell Downey (Airey’s Inlet) who were both eliminated. Victoria’s other top seeded competitor, Carl Wright (Phillip Island) was in great form late in the day with a big heat win.

Newcastle based surfers were in great form today with Craig Anderson, Jesse Adam and Duncan McNicol all progressing to round three – Anderson particularly impressive scoring a tally of 15.25 which was the days second highest scoring heat win behind Julian Wilson.

The other surprise was the non appearance of the events number two seed Owen Wright who was forced to withdraw due to an injury he suffered at the World Junior Championships last week. Heat wave conditions approaching with offshore winds will likely see small clean waves at Jan Juc in the coming days.
