Honolua Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Classic

    Burleigh Heads Qld Australia
    5 January 2008

Honolua Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Classic held in testing 1.3m conditions at Burleigh Point

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 January, 2008 : - -  Rique Smith rode a classic Egan shooter shaped by his dad - the late, great Col Smith of Newcastle - to win the 2008 Honolua Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Classic. It was Rique's second Classic title, following his 2004 victory, underlining his mastery of the old school boards.

Rique took his single fin to new heights throughout the event in a dynamic display of high performance surfing. Contestants had to ride original single fin boards made before 1985.  Third place-getter Neil Nicholas also rode a Col Smith shape, a sleek multi-channel Free Flight pin tail that went like a rocket. The final was held in testing 1.3m conditions at Burleigh Point in murky surf filled with all sorts of flood debris from the aftermath of Queensland's wild week of surf and rain.

Tree trunks, garbage and other dangerous objects were washed up on the beach during the weekend. A dead cow was found on the shore at Palm Beach, the next beach south of Burleigh Heads. Otherwise, it was another top weekend of frothy surf, frothy beers and good times thanks to the hosts Burleigh Boardriders.

    Final
    1 Rique Smith
    2 Alby Ross
    3 Neil Nicholas
    4 Jackson Close
