DA HUI BACKDOOR SHOOTOUT SURF CONTEST  SCORES GIANT PERFECT PIPELINE

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 January, 2008 : - - Da Hui Backdoor Shootout surfing contest  kicked off in perfect style at the Banzai Pipeline Wednesday. The best Pipeline riders in the world scored perfect 8-15 foot barrels on the first day of the event at the famous North Shore spot. A hugh NW swell generated big open ocean swells that lunged into the reef creating second and third reef giant waves.

Stand outs today included Hawaii’s Jamie O’Brien who score near perfect waves  grinding over the shallow inside section. O’Brien pulled off late entries and grab-rail perfect positioned rides to garner high scores.

“I got some of the heavy inside barrels over the sand bar, just racing and grinding down the line, there is still quite a bit of sand on the reef”, said O’Brien. “I caught some heavy waves, this is a great event, no one loses, the scores are all added up, it smokes.”  
 
The second high scores went to California’s Nathan Fletcher who took off on the biggest waves on second reef with crowds cheering on the beach. “I live and die for this and it all happens in just seconds”, said Fletcher. “It’s just great to get back to the beach and an honor to be here surfing with the boys”.

The holding period for this one-of-a-kind event is January 2-13, 2008 at Ehukai Beach Park. This is the first time in four (4) years that Da Hui has been able to proceed with the contest due to City permit denials and/or lack of decent contest days/holding period. So the contest founder, directors and administration are eager to put this Shootout in motion. The last Backdoor Shootout ran in 2004 with Pancho Sullivan winning a cool $40,000!

This contest boasts the most participation of Hawai’i born surfers and with it’s unique ‘no-elimination’ judging format which involves three rounds of non-elimination, four man heats and only your best three waves scored – it’s any surfer’s game. So expect to see the best waveriders in the world competing for a shot at the Shootout title!
