2007/2008 Mavericks Surf Contest®

Big Wave Contest
Half Moon Bay, California, USA
7 December 2007 - 31/March 2008

Mavericks Surf Contest gets greenlight for Saturday swell

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 January, 2008 : - - Legendary surfer and Contest Director Jeff Clark has officially called The 2008 Mavericks Surf Contest® for 8 a.m. on Saturday January 12th.  For the first time in Mavericks Contest history, Mother Nature will deliver a Contest-worthy swell during the official waiting period over a weekend.  Support from the County of San Mateo, the City of Half Moon Bay and numerous Contest partners will make this historic day possible.

Surfers will compete for a total prize purse of $75,000 and the title of 2008 Mavericks Surf Contest® Champion. The 2008 Champion will be presented with $30,000 grand prize, a limited edition REACTOR watch, and a one-of-a kind, hand-shaped Jeff Clark surfboard.

Mavericks organizers are encouraging fans to view the free, live webcast of the Contest from the comfort of their own homes at myspace.com/maverickssurf or to attend the special live viewing party at AT&T Park in San Francisco, with webcast footage displayed on the giant AT&T stadium screen.

Given the difficulty of seeing the event from shore, these alternatives represent the best viewing options for Mavericks fans. The groundbreaking webcast will feature multiple cameras and, for the first time, close-up shots of all the action on the water from a wireless jet ski cam. All-day Tickets for the AT&T Park viewing party will include in-and-out privileges and can be purchased for $20 in advance at attpark.com or for $25 on Saturday at AT&T Park.

January 12 – 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (t.b.d. weather permitting); 7:30 a.m. – Media boat (Huli Cat) scheduled to depart from “H” dock; 8:00 a.m. – Contest begins (four first round heats); 11:30 a.m. – Semi–finals begin (2 heats); 1:30 p.m. – Finals begin (1 heat); 3:00 p.m. – Awards Ceremony (on beach)

About The Mavericks Surf Contest®
Every winter season, Mother Nature offers up supremely harsh conditions and the giant, unpredictable waves that characterize Mavericks and the annual Mavericks Surf Contest®.  Frigid waters, dangerous currents, jagged rocks and the ever-present threat of the great white shark. Mix these with perfect weather conditions, and 24 legendary surfers will get the contest call from legendary big-wave surf pioneer and contest director, Jeff Clark. When they do, they will have only 24 hours to arrive in Half Moon Bay to face the extreme conditions, thunderous waves and each other.

Coined as "the wave beyond," the Mavericks™ brand inspires hardcore athletes to face the unpredictably raw power of Mother Nature, and stirs the souls of those who aspire to challenge their own limits. Mavericks remains true to its core: a cold, mysterious and foreboding place that demands respect from everyone who goes there and inspires them to attempt the extraordinary. For more information, including photos, surf conditions and contest highlights, visit Mavericks Surf Ventures online atwww.maverickssurf.com.
