Top Seeds Demolish Chances of Hopefuls at 46th annual Hyundai National Surfing Champs

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 January, 2008 : - - Top seeds demolished the hopes of many on day two of the Hyundai National Surfing Championships presented by Quiksilver.  The near perfect 1.0m – 1.5m swell conditions that greeted competitors meant that two rounds of the open men were run to find the final sixteen surfers.

Among the many to shine were the top seeds and favourites at the event such as 2007 runner up Maz Quinn, younger brother Jay Quinn and Bobby Hansen all of Gisborne.

Today it was Jay Quinn who shone out from under his older brother to post the highest score of round 3 - 15.75 points.  Quinn fired off a searing backhand attack and found all the best waves in the 20 minute heat.  He posted a heat high 8.50 to leave second placed Leon Santorik (Rag) well behind.

It was Santorik that had earlier surfed to the highest single wave score of the day a near perfect 9.50.  The two surfers now move through to the quarterfinals and one step closer to etching their names in the prestigious cup for the first time.

Quinn will face another in-form surfer in the form of local Blair Stewart.  Stewart was happy early in the day just to get through his first heat of which he suggested was the first in over a year.  However his third round performance superseded his first with his surfing looking as sharp as it has ever been.  Stewart posted a 15.50 point heat total.

Bobby Hansen continued to impress with his aggressive attacking style of surfing.  Scoring 14.75 to win his heat, Hansen blazed across seemingly unmakeable sections on waves to complete some of the biggest turns of the day.  Hansen will face up to Chris Malone – a day one standout who was unstoppable yet again today.  The two will face Matt Scorringe (WGM) and Rowan Aish (Mur).

Maz Quinn looked annoyed at his performance today despite winning his heat.  He struggled to find the longer waves but fit all he could into the waves he rode.  His 11.50 heat total was the lowest of the eight heat winners today and he will need to find the better waves come quarterfinals time when he faces up to Luke Cederman (Rag) who continues to impress with his powerful big turns and aerial antics.

Others to impress included Gauranga Ormond (WGM), Brent Rasby (Gis) and Zennor Wernham (Rag). Conditions are expected to be similar for day three of the Hyundai National Surfing Championships presented by Quiksilver.  However there is a forecast decrease in swell size.  A decision on the location and order of events for day two will be made at 7am on Sunday morning.
