Ozmosis Nova Pro Junior - Top Seeds In Good Form At Gunnamatta
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 January, 2008 : - - Good clean surf provided ideal conditions for the top 20 year and under Junior Men and Women surfers of Australia and the highly seeded surfers stood out on day 3 at Gunnamatta Beach.
The Women’s quarter finals began the day in left breaking 1m punchy breakbreaks and current ASP World Junior Champion Sally Fitzgibbons had an enthralling battle with New Zealand’s Paige Hareb.
The two are fast becoming fierce rivals after Fitzgibbons defeated Hareb in the final in Sydney for the World Junior Championships just over a week ago. In the four surfer quarter finals Hareb got the better of Fitzgibons by winning the heat however Fitzgibbons still advanced in second.
That set up a woman on woman semi final between the two later in the morning and Fitzgibbons showed her class to take a big win and move into the final. The second semi final saw Kirby Wright advance to an all south coast NSW Pro Junior Women’s final proving too strong for Sunshine Coast surfer Lori Kelly. Kelly’s 3rd place finish the best of her promising career so far.

Junior Men’s round three surfers relished the clean conditions today and all the highly seeded surfers were in great form. Stuart Kennedy (Lennox Head), Julian Wilson (Sunshine Coast), Heath Joske (Coff’s Region), Lincoln Taylor (Stradbroke Island), Chris Friend (Sunshine Coast), Jayke Sharpe (Coff’s Harbor) and Tahitian Tamaroa McComb were all scoring excellent waves and all will be hard to beat as the event heads into the finals stages this weekend.
While the high seeds looked good, a number of the younger lesser known up and coming Pro Juniors were equally impressive and are certain to be contenders in the finals this weekend.
The sole remaining Victorian surfer Cahill Bell-Warren (Bells Beach) was a strong round three heat winner today and after his win said “ So good to have decent waves to surf in such an important event – Making it through to the finals and the weekend is always a good feeling but there’s a long way to go and with good surf likely it’s an important event for me to try and do really well in.”
Young Bondi Beach surfer Perth Standlick was another of the lesser known surfers to take a solid heat win today – “ I love the waves here, plenty of energy and really consistent – it makes me go really hard knowing the wave has the power to cope with powerful moves – It’s a favourite beach of mine after winning that heat!”
With offshore winds and great weather forecast for the weekend large crowds are expected to watch the finals tomorrow and given today’s quality performances they’ll be in for a great display tomorrow. The event begins tomorrow around 8:00am with finals scheduled for around 4:00pm and the Peninsula Boardriders Club have also organized live bands for the famous Gunnamatta first car park.
