Phil Macdonald set to roll out his second annual Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 January, 2008 : - - Broulee, NSW -- Professional surfer Phil Macdonald is putting a spin on the traditional surfing contest with his Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage, to be held on the NSW south coast this weekend. Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage provides an innovative and fresh approach to the traditional junior surfing competition in an effort to unearth the new wave of Australian surfing talent.
Unlike other surfing competitions, Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage will allow competitors (16 years and under) to surf three heats each without elimination instead of the traditional cutthroat format.
Each surfer’s two highest scoring rides from each heat will be added together, along with bonus points awarded according to the position the competitor finishes in each heat. The six best placed surfers in the each division will progress to their division final. Returning to his home break for the second successive year, south coast hero and Ocean & Earth team rider Phil Macdonald is excited to see the results.
“Growing up, I remember there was nothing worse than being knocked out in your first heat after travelling a long way just to get to the competition,” he said. “This event is more focused on the kids building confidence over the weekend as there is a greater focus on a bonus points and leader board system.”
Held at South Broulee beach from Saturday 2 February to Sunday 3 February, the event provides a great opportunity for young surfers from Kiama to the Victorian border to experience competition on a bigger scale - something which is always around the corner. “There aren’t too many contests on the south coast for the kids down here, so it’s good for the area and the young surfers to have something of this scale,” Macdonald said.
“It’s a great way to help support and nurture the talent down here. There was definitely nothing like this for me when I was growing up here.” Ocean & Earth team rider Sean Mawson from Manyana, who won the 13 and under boys division last year, appreciates having such a great competition so close to home.
“It’s definitely good to have a contest like this on the south coast. It’s really good to see the pro’s down here supporting it as well,” he said. Competition starts at 7am on both days for each of the four divisions – girls and boys 13 and under and girls and boys 16 and under.
In addition to the main competition, Phil Macdonald, brother Anthony and fellow pro surfers Kirk Flintoff, Kai Otton and Dayyan Neve will be spoiling onlookers with a not to be missed Expression Session. There will also be a host of beach activities and challenges with great prizes taking place over the weekend.
The event, which is the first of four Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage events being staged throughout the year, will act as a qualifying event to the Ocean & Earth International Teenage Rampage to be held at Curl Curl in December. Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage is proudly supported by Vodafone, Cool Shoe Corporation, Podsurf.TV, Fluid Adventures, Byrne Surfboards, Broulee Boardriders Club and Surfing NSW.
