Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage goes off on the NSW South Coast

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 February, 2008 : - - Promoting fun, innovative surfing and the south coast of NSW is what pro surfer Phil ‘Macca’ Macdonald achieved at the weekend with his Ocean & Teenage Rampage. Allowing competitors from all four divisions to surf three heats each without elimination, Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage focussed on promoting the spirit of grass roots surfing.

What resulted was some excellent junior surfing action. Over 90 competitors, hailing from Kiama to the Victorian border, surfed in four divisions – girls and boys 13 and under and girls and boys 16 and under over the course of the competition. Contest director and Ocean & Earth team rider Phil Macdonald was ecstatic with the outcome of the event.

“It has been a really good weekend,” Phil said from the contest location at Moruya Breakwall. “Both the event and the level of surfing have definitely improved in leaps and bounds from last year. All the kids are definitely the pushing the level of surfing down here,” he said.

Defending 16 Boys champion and Currarong local Jordi Watson, scored the highest single wave total of the contest with a 9.8 in the final and went on to successfully defend his title from Justin Arnold, Kieran Quinn and Doug Chandler (all from Gerringong). “I’m so stoked that there’s a major competition like this on the south coast, and that guys like Macca and Kai Otton have come out and supported us,” Jordi said.

“To successfully defend my title here is great and will give me a lot of confidence going into the next series of Pro Junior events.” Hayley Murray (Culburra Beach), was super impressive in the 16 & Under Girls division, maintaining a solid lead over her rivals through each Round, and went on to dominate her Final to win from Gerringong’s Erin Dark.

Taking out the 13 & under girls and boys division Finals were Tess Mawson (Manyana) and Michael Wright (Culburra) respectively, who both placed within the top two of their divisions after the 3 rounds of competition.

Phil Macdonald, brother Anthony, fellow pro surfer Kai Otton and regional Ocean and Earth team riders blew the crowd away with some explosive surfing during the Pro Expression Session, held before the Finals in front of a strong crowd. The competitors, parents and spectators were also entertained with a multitude of Ocean and Earth product giveaways, beach activities and challenges.

Ocean & Earth’s Global CEO Paul Munten was also on hand throughout and was extremely pleased with the event. “We are absolutely stoked with the turnout. Ocean & Earth are extremely happy with how the event was run and we would really like to thank the entire local community, all the event sponsors and families for their continued support throughout the event,” said Munten.

“The standard level of junior surfing for the both the girls and boys was simply awesome. It’s indicative of the excellent talent base that is on the south coast of NSW. We couldn’t be happier.”
