Quiksilver Goodwave presented by Virgin Mobile in association with Resolution - Quik Facts

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 February, 2008 : - - The Quiksilver Goodwave is an invite-only event. A one-day surfing event that takes place at the New Pier in Durban.

What makes it different: It has an 11-month waiting period, ensuring that the event will be run on the best day of waves during that period. As the waves are usually big and powerful on that one day, wave runners are used to ferry the surfers to backline after their waves. The swell and conditions are monitored daily to predict optimum surf for the event.

What’s it worth: Once a surfer has been selected, it costs one Rand to enter on the day, and the first prize is R75,000, which is more than a four-star rated WQS event first prize. A good turn around for a day’s surfing. R100 000 total prize money.

Who is in it: Included in the 32 selected surfers are previous event winners Warwick Wright, Simon Nicholson and Antonio Bortoletto. The four South African World Championship Tour (WCT) surfers Travis Logie, Jordy Smith, Royden Bryson and Ricky Basnett are all on the list as well, but their entry into the event is still subject to an ASP approval at this stage. The rest of the competitors are made up of New Pier locals and top surfers from across the country.

Additional Info: The event has a cutting-edge website –  goodwave.co.za – and it has already gone live with daily surf reports, news, and event history, as well as videos and photos from previous events. You can also sign up for sms and email alerts on the site. The Quiksilver Goodwave will also be featured on an upcoming episode of Boardriders TV, the locally-produced surf, skate and snow show.
