The Saltrock Open to kick off the 2008 UK Pro Surf Tour at Croyde Beach

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 February, 2008 : - - The 2008 UK Pro Surf Tour is back with a bang on Easter weekend as the Saltrock Open comes to Croyde Beach, and if the past five years are anything to go by, we could be in for a treat.

The long Easter weekend of the 22nd / 23rd / 24th March is early this year and therefore open to more opportunities of swell. The last time Easter was this early we had the best surf that year on the tour and saw an epic 10 point tube ride from Llewellyn Whittaker.

This year we will see surfers of all ages and abilities travel to Devon’s most celebrated break, possibly one of the best Beach Breaks in the country, to take part in what has traditionally become one of the most important stops on the tour.  This first tour pit-stop has grown in stature over the years thanks to epic conditions and some heroic performances from the best surfers in the country.

Saltrock remain proud sponsors of this prominent leg of the tour, which will feature 4 main categories: Men’s Open, Pro-Juniors, Women’s Open and the Groms Tour. The Groms Tour includes 3 categories of its own; an Under-12s Open, an Under-16 Boys and Under-16 Girls.  Saltrock are keen to maintain their support of young surfers and invest in the future of British surfing.

Saltrock has been a prominent part of the North Devon surfing community for over 20 years, and is again proud to be hosting a showcase event in their spiritual home of Croyde.  This event will be the first of a nine event tour which spans the UK and Northern Ireland.

Last year there were many highlights and fantastic displays of contemporary surfing. But one note of significance was when the event proved its worth to the competitors with the winner in the Open, Sam Lamiroy, eventually becoming the champion of the tour.

In the Women’s division it was the first signs of the changing of the guard with young talented girls such as Holly Donnelly, Gwen Spurlock, Beth Mason and of course the event winner Karma Worthington showing their intentions to push the boundaries and show what the future of women’s surfing is in the UK.

Relentless Energy drink will also be supporting the event giving £250 for the best Aerial of the contest and providing plenty of refreshment to keep the surfers going. As usual, this year’s contest will be celebrated on Saturday night with a party in a prominent local pub.

About Saltrock
Saltrock was founded in 1988 by two brothers to fund winter surf trips. Today, Saltrock is a major player in the British and Irish surf scenes, and is gathering huge international appeal.

MD Angus Thomson believes the success of Saltrock is down to an understanding of what people actually want.  “We produce affordable, high quality and individual styles in a market where standardisation and overpricing are becoming the norm.  Our down to earth approach lets us stand out from the crowd."
