Roxy Invitational Mozambique eyeing epic Ponto Do Oro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 February, 2008 : - - Mozambique – The 2008 Roxy Invitational has come around again and this time it promises to be more exciting and better than before. With a longer waiting period this year and some explosive surfers in the line up at one of the world’s best pointbreaks in Mozambique, this years’ event is sure to be one to remember.

This ground-breaking and prestigious invite-only event, at a remote location in Mozambique, has a R10k first prize, R3k for second and R2k for third. The event has a waiting period from 04-11 March 2008, at the fabled wave of Ponto Do Oro, a time good for cyclone swells and favourable winds.

An eclectic bunch of surfers have been invited to the event which include the likes of former WCT surfer Heather Clarke, Western Cape’s Taryn Chudleigh, multiple national champ Tamarys Walters, up-and-comers like Kirsty Delport, as well as Heidi Palmboom and Sarah Baum. Alternate surfers Tanika Hoffman and Danielle le Roux will making the journey across the border with the hopes of getting into the event in the case of any illness or injury.

In 2007 the event did not run as conditions did not live up to event criteria which are to run in a minimum 3-4 ft rippable waves. The event slogan says it all “Serious waves, serious surfing” and Candice Mac Nicol of Roxy is adamant that the event will not run in average conditions.

John McCarthy from Saltwater GIRL Magazine was equally upbeat about the event. "The logistics of taking a 12 of SA’s top female surfers to a remote location in Mozambique to hold a surf contest are seriously challenging,” said McCarthy.

“That said, one of these days we’re going to get lucky with the surf, and when we do the images that will come out of this event will blow peoples minds. Where else in the world could you ride a wave as long as Supers but with crystal clear tropical water and with only three other people out?"

While the event is a collaboration between Roxy and Saltwater GIRL Magazine, with Saltwater GIRL Magazine being the presenting sponsor, their partnership is supported by Virgin Mobile and Resolution Health. The event is also going to be broadcast on an upcoming episode of Boardriders TV.

Saltwater GIRL are going to be running a link from their website – swg.co.za  – where they are going to reporting live from the event site. They are going to be releasing daily updates as well as any news, and contest coverage when the event goes down. They are also going to be doing rider profiles of all the invited surfers. Other web links can be found on the Roxy South Africa facebook page  - facebook.com - (search Roxy SA), as well as on MXit (Tradepost/MXit Mix).

Other sponsors of the event include MXit Lifestyle and Supersport.

Bianca Buitendag
Adel Nortjie
Tamarys Walters
