Madeiran Goverment saves the wave at Lugar de Baixo

To: Ponta Sol supporters,

Subject: Victory at Lugar de Baixo!!!!

Greetings to all ocean lovers,

Great news on the wave front. I just returned from a two-week trip to Madeira, where I did some heavy campaigning for the "Save the Wave" movement, to stop the marina project at Lugar de Baixo aka Ponta do Sol. I met with members of Parliament, two political parties, and many environmental organizations. We gave press conferences and I was interviewed on Madeiran television by the Nine O´clock News.

The end result: today the Madeiran Government announced that it will MOVE THE MARINA TO AN ENTIRELY NEW LOCATION, to the bay west of Lugar de Baixo, which is closer to the village of Ponta do Sol. This new location should have no effect on the point break, and is a sound victory for the power of the international surfing community. I must admit that throughout the battle, I was sceptical that we could make much of a difference, but was willing to give it mt best try. Kudos to all of you who helped publicize this issue, as well as to all of you who sent e-mails and letters to the Government of Madeira. Together we made a difference, and have successfully saved one of the world´s great surf breaks.

There are still some tasks ahead, of course, which I will now try to devote more time to. A wave in Chile, Puertecillo, is still under tremendous threat by a large seaside development, and there are still some remaining issues in Madeira. But the first battle has been won soundly, and we should all be proud.

Sincerely,

Will Henry
