Brian Ching Warms Up for Pan Pacific Championships on the Waves in Hawaii
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 February, 2008 : - - Brian Ching, Forward for the Major League Soccer champion Houston Dynamo, enjoyed being back at home in Hawaii this week for the Pan Pacific Championships, taking time out to enjoy the burgeoning sport of stand-up paddle surfing with legendary Hawaiian waterman Brian Keaulana.
Ching's first sporting dream was of being a professional surfer, so it didn't take much to get him off the field and onto the waves for a warm-up this week at Pokai Bay, on the west side of Oahu. Joining Ching in the surf were members of the Sydney Australia team - rivals on the field but clearly no match for Ching on the waves. Ching was the first soccer player from Hawaii to be drafted by the MLS, back in 2001.
Stand-up paddle surfing, born in Hawaii half a century ago, has been enjoying a major international resurgence of late with many athletes picking it up as a form of cross-training. Keaulana heads up stand-up paddle surfing company C4 Waterman and is regularly called upon to host athletes and celebrities visiting Hawaii.
