Waveriders wins Audience Award at Dublin Film Festival

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 March, 2008 : - - The documentary / feature film Waveriders has won the very prestigious Audience Award at the Dublin International Film Festival last week.

The film starring Gabe Davies, Richard Fitzgerald and the Malloy brothers and featuring Kelly Slater, was directed by Dubliner Joel Conroy of Inis Films, produced by Margo Harkin of Besom Productions Derry, and written Lauren Davies. The voiceover was wonderfully read by Irish Hollywood star, Cillian Murphy and the first song for the soundtrack was provided by U2.

The premiere on February 22nd sold out in hours and the film beat Oscar winner 'There Will Be Blood' and Colin Farrell's latest movie 'In Bruges' to scoop the Audience Award. Waveriders will next be shown at the Belfast Film Festival on April 19th before moving on to further worldwide festivals. The film is currently being scouted by distributors to determine its future release.

Gabe Davies surfed the biggest swell ever ridden in Ireland, which provided the dramatic climax to the film. Gabe's wave has also been nominated for the Billabong XXL Big Wave of the Year Award to be determined shortly.

The Irish Times reviewed the film premiere positively. Publicity includes Variety Magazine Hollywood, The Times, The Irish Times, The Sunday Times Magazine, the Mirror, The Sun, Outsider Magazine, RTE television, The Surfers Path extended feature and TV3 - Gabe appearing on the morning programme Ireland am.
