Surf School Overcrowding Issues Tackled With Licensing
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 March, 2008 : - - Harlyn Surf School is proud to announce that they have become one of the first surf schools in the UK to be awarded an operators licence as part of a new and unique “Surf School Licensing Scheme” launched this year by North Cornwall District Council.
With new surf schools appearing annually, some operating without insurance and proper qualifications, concerns have been raised about overcrowding issues, operating practices and the long term sustainability of both the local beaches and the surf school industry. The new licensing scheme recognises and promotes best practice and licences are only awarded to those operators who meet strict operating criteria.
Importantly the licensing scheme is different to other current approval schemes in place as it limits the amount of surf schools that can operate from a beach which is a step forward in addressing the problem of overcrowding in the water. From 2008 any individual or company that wishes to provide water activity tuition from any of the beaches managed by NCDC must now hold an operators licence
Chris Rea of Harlyn Surf School quotes; “ We are delighted to have been granted a licence and be part of a scheme that has been long overdue in this industry. Managing surf school numbers is one way of helping to alleviate the overcrowding and safety issues that can occur during the peak holiday periods."
We have met the operating criteria, have impressive safety records, a long standing trading history and a very experienced instructor team and we are really looking forward to the start of the 2008 season.
