Day 1 of Roxy Invitational presented by Salt Water Girl

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 March, 2008 : - -  Today saw the start of one of the most exciting women’s events on the surfing calendar, and in case you’ve been hiding under a rock somewhere near Brakfontein, the Roxy Invitational presented by Saltwater GIRL magazine is all about 13 bronzed surfer chicks wreaking havoc in the beautiful expanses of Mozambique while they wait for the right conditions to run just seven heats of competition.

However, the first day of the seven day window period was more about an early start, trekking through gnarly sand dunes and a consistent blanket of unbearable heat rather than scoring classic four to six foot point-of-gold (otherwise known as Ponto D’Oura) rights.

With the aim of crossing the border by 8am sharp, the girls were yanked from their beauty sleep and herded at the Roxy head office, at a disgustingly early 2am, to pack boards and supplies before cramming into pimped-out four-by-fours including a modified Red Bull Land Rover limousine, aptly named Stretch.

With not much filling the remainder of a lazy day one, other than afternoon siestas and most girls finding their groove in a midday fun session and a late arvo shorebreak, the girls ended things off with a classic dinner before finding their way into their cabins and amping for an early start and the prospect of holding round one of competition in the glassy morning conditions.
