New Guard Shines on Day 2 of Roxy Invitational presented by Saltwater GIRL magazine

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 March, 2008 : - - It was all about the new guard today when youngsters like 14 year old Bianca Buitendag and 16 year old Kirsty Delport put on an epic display of contest surfing that had many onlookers placing bets on who was going to be SA's newest star in women's surfing.

Former Pro Surf Tour champion, Sarah Maritz, later commented about the importance of not underestimating the likes of Buitendag and Delport even though she made her intentions clear by winning the third heat of the day with two excellent scores, and amassing a heat total of 16 points out of a possible 20.

> But it was the fourth and final heat of the day that proved to be the nail biter in this prestigious event. With a R10 000 carrot dangling in front of the competitors as they hit the water, it was Kirsty Delport who found the waves and went to town with every opportunity that was presented, and by her second wave had racked up a heat total of 16 points.

By laying it on the rail and committing to every perfectly pitched lip that reeled itself down the Ponto D'Oura point, Delport banged in the highest single wave score of 9.0 and ultimately accosted for multiple SA women's champ, Tamarys Demoroussem's elimination from the Roxy Invitational.

> With good three to four foot waves that provided a killer first round of competition, event organizers, along with the remaining eight surfers, decided to hold off the rest of competition until the good late morning conditions coupled with a favorable tide to run the two semi finals and final.

And with still five days remaining in the window period, surfers and organizers are confident that this year's Roxy Invitational will crown a champion and seal the deal through much appreciated good surf.
