Local Surfers ready to take on Internationals at Arrive Alive Central Coast Pro
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 March, 2008 : - - Soldiers Beach at Norah Head on the Central Coast of NSW, will provide the perfect venue for blistering surfing action for the Arrive alive Central Coast Pro from 11-16 March. With a massive combined Men’s and Women’s cash prize pool of US$105,000 and precious ratings points up for grabs, the 4 star rated Arrive alive Central Coast Pro is one of the headline acts on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS).
Adding to the event’s already high stakes is a stellar line-up of the world’s hottest surfers – all chomping at the bit to get their 2008 WQS campaigns underway. The Arrive alive Central Coast Pro will allow competitors a great opportunity to seize valuable early season points in their bids to qualify for the 2009 Men’s and Women’s ASP World Tour.
The 2007 Central Coast Pro proved to be the perfect stepping stone for Jordy Smith (South Africa), who prevailed in the Final for his maiden WQS event victory. Smith kept his good form going all year to easily qualify for the elite ASP World Tour after finishing first overall on the gruelling WQS.
Highlighted by the inclusion of top seeds Nick Muscroft (VIC) and Shaun Cansdell (Mullaway, NSW), and ASP World Tour surfers Mick Campbell (Port Macquarie, NSW) and Roy Powers (Hawaii), 2008 will see one of the strongest fields’ in the event’s history.

The big names will have their work cut out for them however with the strong contingent of local, Central Coast luminary surfers looking to use intimate knowledge of the super consistent Soldiers Beach to put the pressure on the field. Heading up the local charge is Umina local Glenn Hall, who after an injury plagued 2007 is looking for a solid start to the year with a win at the Arrive alive Central Coast Pro.
“Missing all of last year and watching from the sidelines (foot injury) has inspired me to do well in 2008. I’ve had a really good preparation and am fired up for this event,” he said. “You want to do well in every event, but this contest has an extra incentive. Having friends and family watching on the beach is an awesome feeling. It’s an amazing event for the entire Central Coast community.”
Other Central Coast surfers competing in the Arrive alive Central Coast Pro include Drew Courtney (Umina), 2006 Central Coast Pro champion Matt Wilkinson (Copacabana), Matt Seymour (Lake Mumorah) and Beau Atchison (Green Point). Meanwhile the parochial Norah Head Surfing Fraternity, the local Boardrider Club based at Soldiers Beach, will strongly represented by event wildcard Wayne Secomb along with Jamie Skillin, Ricky Royle and Max Blanchfield.
The 2008 Arrive alive Central Coast Pro heralds the uprising of the Women’s event on the international surfing landscape. Upgraded from a 1 star rated competition (2006 & 2007) to a 4 star event in 2008, the Women’s Arrive alive Central Coast Pro has also attracted international surfing talent ready to take advantage of increased prize money and tour ratings.
ASP Women’s World Tour surfers Jacqueline Silva (Brazil), Karina Petroni (USA), Julia Christian (USA) and Serena Brooke (QLD) will battle it out with top seeds and fellow ASP World Tour surfers Jesse Miley-Dyer (Bronte, NSW) and Central Coast locals Amee Donohoe (McMasters Beach, NSW) and Rebecca Woods (Copacabana, NSW).
The international superstars will not have it all their own way however, with strong resistance expected from the new breed of young guns. Lead by surfing’s current ‘it’ girl, ASP World Junior Champion and WQS ratings leader Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa, NSW), the competition is set to be fierce – and not to be missed.
The event will be webcast live at the event website arrivealivepro.com The event website will feature live scores, heat by heat results, daily news as well as photo and video galleries updated daily. The Arrive alive Central Coast Pro is proudly supported by the NSW Motor Accidents Authority, Wyong Shire Council, The Beachcomber Hotel, Ocean & Earth, ASP Australasia, Surfing NSW, NBN Television, Central Coast Sun Weekly, Star FM, Australia’s Surfing Life and Greater Toukley Vision.
About Arrive alive Arrive alive is the NSW Motor Accidents Authority’s (MAA) youth road safety program. The MAA regulates the Compulsory Third Party (CTP) personal injury insurance scheme in NSW (known as Greenslips). The MAA is concerned about the over-representation of young people aged 17 to 25 in road crashes. Young drivers in this age group are at a higher risk of crashing than drivers of older ages for lots of reasons, including their inexperience, attitudes to driving and a tendency towards risk taking behaviour.
The MAA has a major commitment to improving road safety in NSW, and recognises that achieving this requires effective communication with young people about risk taking on the roads. This is where Arrive alive comes in. Arrive alive includes a range of programs that reflect common interest areas for young people. These programs aim to involve young people in activities they enjoy while positively influencing attitudes and behaviours on the roads. The MAA wants to see young people stay safe on the roads and Arrive alive!
