Noosa Festival of Surfing finals decided in great waves at Noosa's first point!

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 March, 2008 : - - Noosa surfer Josh Constable has won the Telstra Men’s Pro and Jennifer Smith (USA/California) the Banana Boat Women’s Pro in excellent 1m surf at Noosa today! Constable was the events defending champion and the 2006 ASP World Longboard Champion made it 3 victories in total at this prestigious ASP World Rated Longboard event.

After his win a delighted Constable said “Perfect start to the season for me to win this event, I haven’t won that many events recently but to nail this victory is fantastic – Everything worked perfectly today including the long perfect waves on the point – Hopefully today’s win sets up the year for me – It feels perfect now!”

Constable sealed today’s final on his second last ride which was awarded an outstanding 9.23 out of a possible 10 and together with his second top scoring ride of 8.43 to notch up a final tally of 17.66 out of 20.

Second place went to Coolum Sunshine Coast surfer Seb Wilson who was always in contention after opening the final with an excellent 8.4 ride and on his final ride found another excellent score of 8.1 to finish on 16.5 which was  considerably short of Constables 17.66.  Third place also went to a Sunshine Coast surfer in Grant Thomas with Jackson Close, also Queensland, placing 4th in a high quality final.

Reigning Women’s World Longboard Champion Jennifer Smith dominated from start to finish in the Women’s defeating Hawaiian surfer Jana Irons – final scores Smith 17.33 to Irons on 14.87. Third place went to French surfer Justine Dupont.

It was Smith’s second successive win in Australia having won at Phillip Ilsand in Victoria last month – After her win today she said - “ What a fantastic way to finish this amazing event in these perfect point waves – I can’t believe it! – I’ve had an awesome time in Australia competing and free surfing the whole coastline and to win today really caps it off!”

Highest placed Australian in the Banana Boat Women’s was Coolangatta surfer Selby Riddle who placed 4th overall.  Perfect 1m surf greeted Australia and the world’s top longboard surfers for the finals day of the 2008 Noosa Festival of Surfing. With an incredible 18 finals decided it was a massive day which culminated an amazing week of surfing -

    Stand Up Paddle

Honolulu's Bonga Perkins defeated an international field in the C4 Waterman Stand-up Paddle Surfing division of the Noosa Festival, staged on the Queensland Sunshine Coast in Australia, today. The event was contested in excellent 2-3 foot peeling waves at Noosa Point.

Runner-up to Perkins was fellow Hawaii surfer Brian Keaulana, followed by former world No.2-ranked professional surfer Luke Egan, third, and Queensland surfer Josh Constable, fourth.

The wave of popularity of stand-up paddle surfing, which originated in Hawaii, has been sweeping through Australia this summer. In addition to sponsoring the SUP division that attracted a record field of more than 30 surfers this year, Hawaii company C4 Waterman also hosted a free SUP clinic that was standing room only.
