2008 Central Surf Single Fin Contest goes down at Hickory Bay

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 March, 2008 : - - The 2008 Central Surf Single Fin Surf Contest was just another primo single fin experience for all those involved. With beautiful sunny skies and 2-3 foot glassy a frame surf peaks we where blessed with another awesome day. This was all on offer at Hickory Bay on Banks Peninsula Saturday 8th March due to no surf at all on the local Christchurch beaches.

The call was made at 7am down at the meeting place of Sumner Beach and the core crew of competitors and spectators alike headed over to the bay for the day. A prize pool of over $3500 had been sourced from Sponsors such as Central Surf Shop, Quiksilver,Roxy,Urban Surf shop, Smith Sunglasses, Ransom Surf Wax, ,Dakine ,Marine Bar and Backpackers ,Fourfontaine, Nrg , Sanuk and Kuta Lines,

The divisions were Open, Senior (over 30), Master (over 35) and Women.

Once all the competitors had arrived at Hickory Bay and saw the 2- 3 foot glassy surf, it was decided that the new format trailed at the 2007 event was to be again used. This format was arranged so the surfers could get the most time in the water and surf these single fins to there limits. All the competitors got to surf twice maximizing their scoring potential for the judges on the land.

This did make it a bit difficult for the judges but they were well up to the task of looking for a mixture of traditional single fin moves with the odd modern move thrown in. The surfing was amazing in the surf conditions to say the least with some big 70s carves, grab rail cutbacks, laybacks and some awesome stylist trimming.

Surfers that impressed the judges and spectators throughout the day were Blair O’Keefe and Josh Rees with their ability make old moves look so dam hot and Tony Schafer and his free flowing style. This year’s colourful retro clothed character Dave Watkins was styling in his bad dress sense for the day .He had many wondering on the beach whether he always dressed like that.

After winning the Senior event the year before Dan Warren was back to defend his title and he put in a stealer performance but he couldn’t match the even so consistent  Tony Schafer for the 2008 Senior Crown .

Most of the men in the master’s event grew up riding single fin surfboards when they were first beginning. Their styles showed through with awesome 70s manvoures. In the end it was local surfing legend Johnny Fenton taking it out in commanding style. Once the last final of the open had wrap up it was back over to Christchurch for the prize giving at the Marine Bar and Backpackers.

A big thanks and people involved in the event as well as the generosity of the farmer at Hickory Bay once again for letting us set up right on the beach and enjoy such beautiful surrounds. Sweet.
