GRANGER SEWED UP HIS SECOND STRAIGHT OPEN MENS REGIONAL CROWN

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 March, 2008 : - - After three days of competition at Kewalo Basin, the grounds cleared out from the 120 plus competitors surfing in the spring break National Scholastic Surfing Association Hawaii Regional Championships sponsored by RVCA.

With the awards party on Wednesday night, March 19th, 200 plus competitors, parents and sponsors showed up at Dave and Buster's in the Ward Village Centre for a unique year ending banquet which featured food, awards and special honors for the future of Hawaiian surfing.

Top honors this year went to Granger Larsen from Lahaina, Maui winning the prestigious Open Men division, while the Open Women was taken with no surprise by Alessa Quizon, who has dominated the scene for both the Women and Girls divisions all season.

What made this year's regional and awards ceremony so unique was the support Hawaii's professional surfers gave by showing up at the contest and supporting surfers with funding for travel and entry fee support.

Support included air travel and entry fees to deserving competitors for their display of sportsmanship, hard work and grades by professionals including Flynn Novak, Kekoa Cazimero, Rory Parker, Mikala Jones, Jason Shibata, Titus Kinimaka, Dustin Barca, Mikey Bruneau, Makuakai Rothman, as well as Turk Cazimero and Fred Patacchia.

Kauai surfer-artist also donated to beautiful painting to Bobbi Lee, NSSA Hawaii director, which helped cap a great awards ceremony to a solid regional finish. Powers added a message to the youthful surfers, telling them that you can utilize your surfing to expand into a world outside of becoming a professional surfer if applied right.

Of course, Powers success as an artist is through his creativity as an avid surfer. As for the long night of awards and qualifications, from here surfers get ready to compete in the NSSA National competition in San Clemente at Lower Trestles in June.
