Top International Surfers Soon To Hit Durban Shores
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 March, 2008 : - - Durban – The wheels are in motion for the arrival of the top ASP World Qualifying Series surfers from all over the world to compete in the Quiksilver Pro Durban presented by Virgin Mobile In Association With Resolution.
This event is rated Six Star Prime, and is the highest rated WQS event in Southern Africa. It will run from 11 – 20 April 2008. It offers 3000 valuable WQS points for the winner, as well as a total prize pool of US$135 000 (R1,013,000). This prize pool includes 1st = $15,000, 2nd = $7,400 and equal 3rd = $4,500.
The primary venue for this event is the New Pier on the Golden Mile of Surf City, Durban. During April The New Pier is known to produce some of the finest beach-break waves in the world.
Last year, during the inaugural Quiksilver Pro Durban, the waves were excellent and this year is bound to produce the same and more. In order to gain Prime status the event needs a second world-class venue, and this is The Bluff stretch of coastline, from Anstey’s to Cave Rock, another prime stretch for world class waves at this time of the year.
The contest has a number of facets making up the event, including the exciting new division, the Komunity Project Future Stars. In this event, eight U20 surfers drawn from Surfing South Africa’s transformation program will be flown into Durban and accommodated by Quiksilver South Africa. These eight will have a surf-off and the winner will receive a wildcard into the main event of the Quiksilver Pro Junior.
This event will take place on the first day of the event, Friday 11th April. After this we go into the ASP Grade 2 Quiksilver Pro Junior, the Virgin Mobile Trials Event and then the Quiksilver Pro Durban Main Event. The Main Event finishes on Sunday 20th April.
This is the second year of the event. The winner of the inaugural 2007 event was Australian surfer Luke Munro, who defeated local hero Jordy Smith in the man-on-man final.
All four of South Africa’s WCT surfers, Travis Logie (Dbn). Royden Bryson (EL), Ricky Basnett (Bluff) and Jordy Smith (Dbn) will be competing, as well as the best surfers from our shores. They will be joined by surfers from America, Hawaii, Australia, France, Portugal, Brazil, Spain and more.
The event has its’ own unique mini-site – quikprodurban.com - that will be going live on 1 April 2008. From this website there will be live webcasting, so people from around the world can watch the event in real time on their computers or laptops.
The webcasting team will be anchored by 1989 world champion and Durban-groomed surfer Martin Potter. The website has live feed, live results, highlight video’s, profiles, press areas, downloads and much more. In 2007 the website received over 30,000 unique visits a day from the globe over.
