WQS Spain ends, 4-Star Mark Richards Pro revs up and HB makes scene
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 March, 2008 : - - While the big boys were battling it out at Bells Beach in the Rip Curl Pro, the ASP European WQS Tour got underway for 2008 with the ASP WQS 1-Star Goanna Pro at Tapia in Spain.
Congratulations to Spain’s Marcos San Segundo on his maiden ASP WQS win. The 250 points he received may not help him in any quest for an end of year shot at the Dream Tour, but it will go a long way towards an ASP European title.
The other finalists in order were Simon Marchand (FRA), Edgar Nozes (PRT) and Pablo Solar (ESP). This event has not affected the ratings with the top four spots still held by USA surfers Pat Gudauskas, Nathaniel Curran, Brett Simpson and Gabe Kling. The ASP WQS 2-Star Vans Pier Classic at Huntington Beach is about to start in a few days with a full contingent of 160 men plus around 40 alternates hoping for a start.
The ASP WQS 4-Star Mark Richards Pro at Newcastle is on next week and we could see some changes around the top of the ratings, but the following weeks are dominated by three ASP WQS 6-Star Prime events back-to-back-to-back in Margaret River, Durban and Scotland, which will surely provide some major shuffling of the top rated ASP WQS surfers.
On the women’s ASP WQS this week we have the ASP WQS 2-Star Van’s Pier Classic, but next week’s ASP WQS 6-Star Midori Pro at Newcastle will be the one to watch.
On the junior side just the Oakley Pro Junior at Durban was run over the Easter weekend with the youngster from Mossel Bay, Shaun Joubert, claiming victory. Other good news for the juniors is the upgrading of the Nike 6.0 event at Huntington Beach to a ASP Grade 4 making it the biggest junior event in USA.
That’s it for now. Until next week,
