Durban Surfer Sarah Baum Set To Take On The World

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 March, 2008 : - - In front of thousands of spectators at Bells Beach in Australia, dynamic surfing from 14 year old surfer Sarah Baum saw her secure a solid third place in the girls division of this U16 event.

Sarah, who impressed everyone present at the recent Roxy Invitational in Mozambique placing 2nd, was in top form at the event, and was unlucky in the final. The Rip Curl International GromSearch Finals are part of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach World Tour event currently being surfed in Torquay.

The Girls final was a tight event between Australia’s Phillipa Anderson, Malia Manuel from Hawaii and South African Baum. In a final that saw a see sawing duel amongst the Australian and Hawaiian, with Sarah nipping at their heels the whole way through, it was eventually the Hawaiian who was victorious. Anderson was second with Baum a close third.

Roxy South Africa Marketing Manager Candice Mac Nicol predicts big things for her surfer. “Sarah has huge potential as a surfer and has the backing of Roxy for years to come,” said Mac Nicol. “She came through the Roxy Learn To Surf program and has since become a standout in junior and open women’s surfing events.

Her cat-like agility and new-school surfing accompanied by her acute contest savvy has given her the edge in local events, we are confident that she can carry these qualities to the international contest arena, a third at this highly competitive event is just a start.”

A very stoked Sarah Baum said from Australia that her plans for the rest of ‘08 include a trip to France for the Roxy Pro Junior, as well as surfing as many South African events as possible, while also squeezing in school where possible. Upcoming events in Australia that Sarah is going to be competing in include the six star Midori Pro and the Motorola Pro Junior.

Rosy Hodge is the only female South African on the ASP WT, but with depth of talent like Sarah’s coming through, as well as surfers like Bianca Buitendag from George and Kirsty Delport from Durban, it will only be a matter of time before we have a whole new contingent of female pro surfers competing in the big leagues.
