Flores Eliminated in Round 4 of Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach pres. by Snickers
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 March, 2008 : - - Bells Beach -- Jeremy Flores (FRA), 19, was eliminated in Round 4 of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach by Bobby Martinez (USA) in clean 3 ft (1 meter) waves at the near-by location of Winkipop.
Flores, who faced 2006 ASP Rookie of the Year Martinez in Heat 3, was overtaken by the Californian surfer during the thirty minute decider and finishes equal 9th of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach after his strong start on the Gold Coast where he placed third. The Frenchman betters his 2007 Rip Curl Pro equal 17th finish.
Flores, who was the last of three Europeans in the Rip Curl Pro, was overtaken by Martinez' backhand assaults who posted a 16.33 heat score (out of possible 20), second best tally of the day behind Bede Durbidge's (AUS) 16.73 point finish.
"Bobby is one of the best surfers in the world when it comes to his backhand surfing," Flores said yesterday after his win over Kieren Perrow in Round 3.
Flores, who scored an average 13.10 point heat score, surfed nine waves during the heat, his best ride rewarded with a 7.10 out of possible 10. Martinez surfed three waves only during the clash but got a 7.50 and a 8.83 back to back to secure his quarterfinal birth, where he will face reigning ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS).
After his first season among the ASP Top 45 in 2007 where he clinched the prestigious ASP Rookie of the Year award, Flores pockets two strong results in Australia before moving to the exotic locations of Fiji and Tahiti, respectively stops 3 and 4 on the 2008 Dream Tour.
Miky Picon (FRA) and 2008 ASP World Tour rookie Tiago Pires (PRT), the two other European surfers of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, lost in Round 2. Aritz Aranburu (EUK), who is currently recovering from a broken meniscus, did not surf at Bells Beach but will be back when the tour hits French Polynesia in May.
