    Corona Crown Series Final Event

    Trialist Cederman Almost Unstoppable

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 March, 2008 : - - Raglans Luke Cederman looked unstoppable in his first heat of the Corona Super 16 held at South Piha today. Cederman had earlier won through the trials of the event after not directly qualifying into the main event.  Cederman was one of a number of standouts which included Luke Cederman’s club the Point Boardriders of Raglan who dominated the inaugural Interclub Challenge semifinals.

The Corona Super 16 is the last of six events on the Corona Crown Series for 2007/08.  The event takes on an alternative format with a ‘round robin’ and also comprises the Interclub Championship and the North vs South Challenge.  The surf was small in Piha standards but nice with 1.0m waves fanned by clean offshore winds.

Cederman led the charge with a total heat score of 17.5 out of a possible 20 to win his round robin heat alongside other heat winners current number one seed Maz Quinn (Gis), Ben Kennings (WGM) and Billy Stairmand.  The round robin format gives heat winners the maximum ten points to go toward their aggregate over three rounds.  Second place receives seven points with third place receiving four and fourth place receiving one point.

Cederman posted a perfect ten point ride in his heat with two aerial manoeuvres on one wave coupled together with a series of big power turns.  He had earlier won through the trials alongside Matt Hewitt (Mnt), Keone Campbell (Tara) and Billy Stairmand (Rag) who all gained entry into the main event which comprises the top 16 surfers.

Maz Quinn led the charge for the Gisborne surfers who filled four main event slots, one less than Raglan with five representatives.  However Quinn’s fellow star studded Gisborne line up could not muster up much in the first round with Jay Quinn and Bobby Hansen placing third in their heats and Blair Stewart placing fourth.

With another two rounds before the top eight semifinalists are found, they will want to perform on day two to ensure a top spot.  Jay Quinn will need to ensure he makes the top eight and more if he is to have any chance of toppling his older brother who currently leads the ratings.

Women’s ratings leader Jessica Santorik (Rag) did what it takes to win her heat posting 9.75 to win the first heat of the women’s event.  Santorik is locked into the toughest of tussles with Mischa Davis (Piha) for the Corona Crown Series title with the winner of this event going on to take the series.  Today Davis finished a close second to claim seven points with Daisy Thomas (Chch) in third and trials winner Laura Rishworth (Mnt) in fourth.

Earlier in the trials Rishworth picked up two firsts and a third which was enough to pip the consistency of Alexis Poulter (Rag) who secured three seconds.  Dunedin surfer Hayley Coakes excelled in the last round robin finding her feet to take a win and finish the trials in third ahead of Piha’s Rosa Thompson.

The Interclub Championship, a first for the Corona Super 16 in 2007/08 brought out the fiercest of regional rivalries.  It was the Point Boardriders Club of Raglan that mastered the tag team format the best posting a massive 66 points out of a possible 110 to easily win their semifinal.  Whangamata Boardriders snuck into second place after the New Plymouth Surfriders team failed to make it back to the team box incurring a five point penalty to slip to third with Piha’s Keyhole Boardriders in fourth.

The second semifinal created a huge upset with number two seed Gisborne bowing out after mismanaging their 50 minute time frame.  That allowed Bay Boardriders an easy win ahead of Lion Rock Boardriders and Wildcoast, both of Piha.  The final match up to take place early on Sunday will be a spectacle to witness and will precede the all important North vs South Challenge.

Sunday’s action will go down at South Piha Beach.  The event will run until 3.00pm with prizegiving held at the beach.  Surfing will commence at 8.00pm.  Please see below for results from day one of the Corona Super 16.
