World Champions South Africa ready to do it again at the 2008 ISA World Masters Champs

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 March, 2008 : - - The defending World Masters champions, South Africa, are ready to do it all again at the second ISA World Masters Championships which got under way in 6 - 8 foot surf at Puntas Rocas yesterday.

Despite having to leave South Africa with only eight of their ten team members when World Champion Chris Knutsen encountered passport problems and new cap Justin Healy of Western Province's connecting flight was delayed in Cape Town, the team are all safely in Peru.

Puntas Rocas, which last hosted a World Championship event in 1965, is once again in the international surfing spotlight as teams from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Guatemala, Great Britain, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, 2007 hosts Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Tahiti, Trinidad & Tobago join defending World champions South Africa and hosts, Peru.

Day one kicks off with the opening rounds of the Masters (over 35), Grand Masters (over 40), and Kahuna (over 45) divisions and predictions are that the early rounds will be blessed with 4 - 6 foot surf which is scheduled to increase later in the week.

All the heats will be broadcast live by webcast and can be accessed on www.isasurf.org. Peru time is seven hours behind South Africa.

The ISA World Masters Championships is a team competition and the nation which achieves the highest total score will be crowned as World Champions. Individual results will earn points which will accrue to the Team score and medals will be awarded to the four surfers who reach the finals in each of the five divisions.

The South African Team is made up of Justin Healy (WP) and Andrew Banks (SKZN) in the over 35 division, brothers David and Andre Malherbe (Border) in the over 40's, Marc Wright (KZN) and Nick Pike (Border) are the two over 45's, 2007 over 45 world champion Chris Knutsen (KZN) will be competing in the over 50 division this year while Heather Clark (SKZN) is the Woman in the SA Team.

Ant Brodowicz is the Coach and Brendan Callaghan is Team Manager. Top South African official, Cyril Nel has been appointed as one of five ISA adjudicators at the event.

The South African team has been supported by Jeep and Sport and Recreation South Africa.
