Nike 6.0 Signs Deal Which Will Upgrade to 6 Star in ‘09 and ‘10

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 April, 2008 : - - The 6.0 Lowers Pro will hit world famous Lower Trestles, San Clemente, Calif. for the first stop of the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series April 29 to May 3, 2008. The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) event will launch as a 4 Star for 2008, and as part of a three-year deal, will upgrade to a 6 Star in 2009 and 2010.

Lower Trestles will also play host to an ASP Grade 2 Oakley Pro Junior May 2-3, in conjunction with the 6.0 Lowers Pro. The five-day world-class surfing event will feature top professional and junior competitors from around the globe.

“It is an honor to be part of the heritage and evolution of this event at Lowers, to support professional surfing in the U.S, and to provide a launch pad for our surf team... The depth of this opportunity for Nike 6.0 is huge and really just sinking in now,” said Zach Boon, assoc. brand manager, Nike 6.0.

Formerly known as the Body Glove Surfbout, the 6.0 Lowers Pro will continue to serve as one of the most touted events on the ASP WQS schedule due to its premiere location and history of groundbreaking competitive surfing match ups.

In 2009 and 2010, the event will upgrade to a 6 Star, making it one of only two North American 6 Stars, helping to bring back relevance to the ASP North American leg of the WQS and ensuring that the legacy of competitive surfing at Lowers continues to grow. “This is an enormous step for professional surfing in North America and we are stoked to have Nike 6.0 as a partner,” said Sean Nielsen, ASG director of event operations.

“Currently we have a great base of 1-4 star events on the North American schedule, but only one 5 and 6 star event where results have a significant meaning to competitors trying to qualify for the WCT. Lowers is a jewel sitting right in the heart of the largest surf market in the world. To provide this opportunity for the surfers, the sport, in addition to elevating the profile of Lowers is amazing.”

This year, 192 of the world’s best surfers will battle for an increased prize purse of $80,000, as well as, valuable ASP WQS points and the possibility of a Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series bonus. The Oakley Pro Junior will draw 32 domestic and international juniors (20 years and younger) vying for a $10,000 pay out, Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series bonus, and seeds into the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge.

The Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series (an ASP North America Specialty Series) was formed in 2005 to strengthen surfing in America and has added additional cash and prize incentives each consecutive year. For 2008, the series unites the 6.0 Lowers Pro, the Oakley Newport Pro (Sept. 16-21), and the O’Neill Cold Water Classic (Oct. 21-26) under one banner, as well as, an Oakley Pro Junior at each of the three stops.

The Trifecta Series provides surfers with an opportunity to earn crucial points towards the ASP WQS and Pro Junior end-of-year rankings, which factors into advancement to the coveted ASP World Tour and ASP World Junior Championships.

Additionally, the series will award a $33,333 bonus to the surfer who takes first-place in all three WQS events. Should one surfer not win all three events, the overall points-winner will receive a $10,000 bonus and second and third will receive $3,500 and $1,500, respectively. Juniors will vie for an additional $10,000 bonus.

All 6.0 Lowers Pro action will be viewable online with streaming video and live scoring at Nike6lowerspro.com. In addition to title sponsor Nike 6.0, the 6.0 Lowers Pro is happy to have support from Red Bull, Oakley, SURFER, SURFING, WaveWatch and FUEL TV.
